Related: About this forumThe air in Mid Michigan is AWFUL today
We've been under an air quality advisory for about 3 days. Yesterday AND today I've had to limit my outdoor chores because my throat starts to burn if I stay out too long.

(126,653 posts)I can hardly see the downtown skyline and I'm only about 3 miles away. Smells like burning plastic and my eyes itch. The temperature is pleasant and I'd like to do some gardening but I don't want to work that hard. Might go for a short walk later but that's about it. Yuck.

were losing about 20% of the suns rays. Every gardener I know is complaining about how late everything is. Smells like a wet fire pit.

I wish the best for all of these fire fighters. Perhaps the powers that be will hear us and provide some awesome rains to help put out the fires.

(2,505 posts)It was pretty bad here on Wednesday and Thursday. Not so bad yesterday and today. But
The air quality map on https://www.ventusky.com/
shows its gonna continue to be bad in the Midwest for at least the next few days.

(391 posts)Scientists have been talking about the impacts of climate change on the boreal forest for decades. Well, these wild-land fires and smoke are the new normal and likely to be this way for the future. It is impossible to change vegetative cover (tree species) without an intervening event like fire. So, smoke is going to be a way of life until this forest is largely gone (which is Canada's case is a huge area). Our city government tried to promote our area as a climate refuge. However, they failed to factor in smoke and wildfire.
This is a nice volunteer-based air quality map if you want to check air quality around your location. You can get a sense of trends in air quality by checking this map occasionally (surprising how fast air quality improves with a switch in wind direction).

(21,385 posts)And Illinois isnt great, either. I think most of the Midwest is under air quality advisories right now, and I believe it gets worse the father north (and the closer to Canada) you. We've been in Wisconsin since early this morning, and I noticed the difference in air quality as soon as I got out of the car. *cough cough*
Well be heading home we pretty soon, thank goodness. My asthma hasn't acted up that much yet, but the longer I'm here, the more I feel like I'm pushing my luck.
in Missouri and we are getting smoke from Canada and from fires in Utah and Arizona. Not nearly as bad today as yesterday-Friday.
