Michigan tornadoes at 'fastest pace we've experienced,' National Weather Service meteorologist says

Michigan's recent string of tornadoes has brought the statewide total to 25 so far this year through Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

"Through mid-May, that's the fastest pace we've experienced," said Steven Freitag, a meteorologist with the agency based in White Lake Township.

Michigan's 30-year average is 13 tornadoes for the full year. According to records dating back to 1950, no other year has seen this many tornadoes so early.

The annual record is 39 in 1974, with second-place 35 in 2001 — a year that saw a similarly high number of early tornadoes as this one — and 33 in 1973.
