West Stockbridge sets Nov. 17 special election to fill vacant Select Board seat

West Stockbridge — With the July 30 resignation of former Select Board member Andy Potter, the remaining two members of the dais—Chair Andy Krouss and Kathleen Keresey—set November 17 as the date for the town’s special election to fill the open seat after taking some time to consider their options. That date, according to Town Administrator Marie Ryan, allows for the required 50 days prior to the election for nomination papers to be available. Additionally, a special town meeting is set for October 20 and the general election, including funding for a new school, is on November 4.

“That’s why I pushed this out to [November] 17th,” Ryan said, adding that the deadlines for the elections would be “too on top of each other.”

At the September 2 Select Board meeting, Keresey inquired as to holding the special election together with the general election on November 4. Ryan responded that a “double election on the same day is “really difficult.” “It’s a lot of work,” she said. “I just think it would be too confusing.”

The schedule means that the town caucus during which candidates are nominated will take place on October 8. Nomination papers can be taken out beginning September 3 through September 29, according to Ryan, with September 29 as the last day to return those papers.
