Truck swallowed after parking lot collapses behind Academica Club in Fall River

A 20-foot hole in the road on South Main Street in Fall River swallowed a vehicle on Friday afternoon, and crews had to hoist the vehicle out of the hole.
Truck swallowed after parking lot collapses behind Academica Club in Fall River
FALL RIVER — Antonio Silveira got quite the surprise when he walked out of the Academica Club on Friday and found that his truck had been swallowed up by a giant hole.

While inside the athletic club around 5 p.m., the ground gave way and his truck fell into a gaping 24-foot-wide and 12-foot-deep hole.
“I don’t know what happened,” Silveira said. “I’m glad I wasn’t in the truck.”
City Building Inspector Glenn Hathaway said the cause of the collapsed pavement was likely a “mixture of water and the ground being frozen,” the same recipe that causes potholes.
