Town of Washington special election could change how police chief is selected

WASHINGTON, La. (KLFY) — Residents of the Town of Washington will vote Saturday to decide on an amendment to the town’s home rule charter. The proposed change would alter the process for selecting the chief of police, moving from an elected position to an appointed one.

Currently, the Town of Washington’s Home Rule Charter, which has been in effect since 2010, mandates that the police chief be elected and reside within Washington. If the amendment is approved by voters, the mayor would gain the authority to appoint the police chief.

Washington Mayor Dwight Landreneau said the Home Rule Charter Commission suggested placing this proposal on the ballot.

Landreneau supports the measure, saying it is a way for communities like Washington “to get a qualified person to act or to perform as the chief of police.”
