St. Tammany Parish council to vote on special election for sheriff

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - St. Tammany Parish council members will vote Monday (June 29) on whether to hold a special election on November 3 to choose the next sheriff, according to a parish agenda.

The vote follows the resignation of Sheriff Randy Smith on Wednesday (June 24). Smith stepped down as part of a deal to avoid jail time after pleading guilty to two criminal charges stemming from an attack on a critic at a Northshore restaurant.

Brett Ibert now leads the agency in an interim role.
