Two New Orleans City Council candidates in District E are headed to a runoff

Former City Councilmember Cyndi Nguyen (D) and state Rep. Jason Hughes (D) will face each other in a Nov. 15 runoff for the District E seat, marking an end to a City Council race that drew the largest number of candidates.

Unofficial returns show Nguyen with about 46% of the vote and Hughes with 36%.

The victor will represent residents in New Orleans East and parts of the 9th Ward, succeeding Councilmember Oliver Thomas, who ran for mayor.

Nguyen, 55, is a training coordinator at the Regional Transit Authority. She became the district’s first Vietnamese-American representative from 2018-22, making a bid to return to office at the encouragement of residents longing for change, she has said.
