New Orleans City Council's District A race will go to a runoff election

A crowded race for New Orleans City Council's District A seat will go to a runoff after none of the five candidates got more than 50% of the vote Saturday.

Voters will choose between Holly Friedman, who won about 39% of the vote, and Aimee McCarron, who garnered about 32% — in a runoff election Nov. 15.

Whoever wins will take over the seat currently held by Councilmember Joe Giarrusso, who opted to exit the public sector at the end of his term. District A includes parts of Mid-City, Lakeview, Hollygrove and Uptown.

Friedman, 57, is a former constituent services director for Giarrusso and now director of the open-source intelligence team for the District Attorney’s Office. She campaigned on technology as the cure for improving city services.
