Wild pansy (Viola tricolor)

One of several that are blooming in a dark part of the garden where I sowed shade-tolerant wildflower seeds last fall. Viola tricolor is a common European wildflower.

[Viola tricolor] has been introduced into North America, where it has spread. It is the progenitor of the cultivated pansy, and is therefore sometimes called wild pansy; before the cultivated pansies were developed, "pansy" was an alternative name for the wild form. It can produce up to 50 seeds at a time. The flowers can be purple, blue, yellow or white. -Wikipedia

The wild pansy is known by more than a dozen other names (among them: heartsease, heart's ease, heart's delight, tickle-my-fancy, Jack-jump-up-and-kiss-me, come-and-cuddle-me, three faces in a hood, love-in-idleness, Johnny Jump up and pink of my John), connections to Greek and Roman mythology and might have been what Shakespeare had in mind as the source of the magic love potion in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Thanks!

Dang. I don't have a garden.

The purple stripes look painted on. So pretty!
