. . .generically known in some quarters as a Dobro, except that a Dobro is usually played lap steel guitar style.

I have a friend who regularly plays this instrument.

...get the square neck models.
I saw one at a pawn shop in the town where I grew up. It sounded fantastic but it was square neck, and I don't play slide that way.
The square neck is extremely uncomfortable to play like a regular guitar.
I was bummed, because it was very cheap & sounded so good. But, I'd never play it so I had to pass.

They're all louder than a normal acoustic but one of the two I played the other day was amazingly loud.
I tend to like the sound of the biscuit resonators, but the tri-cone design does really make them project.
This guy mentions them being louder. He isn't lying!
