Whew.

Glad that's over today.

Had cataract surgery in March. Developed retinal bleed and swelling in left eye subsequent to cataract surgery. Was approved for 14 injections, one per month, of the drug Eylea. I've already had two of these injections. Went to the retina surgery center today for my 3rd one.

I was not looking forward to today's visit. As a type 1 diabetic, I'm certainly not afraid of needles since I inject 6 times per day, but these eye shots really wig me out for some reason, even though they don't hurt that much.

At today's visit, I had a dilated exam, and I was told that the bleeding and swelling has resolved after the two shots, and did not need another one today. I still have a problem with my left eye vision. Straight lines appear squiggly, and letters merge together diagonally. The retina doc has no clue why, except for maybe some possible residual swelling that isn't shown on the retinal pictures. Despite this, my uncorrected vision is 20/20 in right eye, and 20/25 in left eye. I haven't been wearing glasses for distance since the cataract surgery.

Prior to the doctor coming into the room, the nurse and I got giggling so hard that we both had tears running down our faces because when I was reading the eye chart, I read the line of letters like they were words instead of individual letters. It was one of those contagious laughter situations.

Got two nice compliments: "You have the most beautiful eyelashes I've ever seen on a man"...and "you're a hilarious piece of work". I always get complimented on my eyelashes and my standard response is always "thank you, at my age they're the only good parts I have left".

I'm so glad this visit is over. Next one isn't until January.

Tomorrow is bloodwork and a visit to my primary care...then I'm done with doctor's visits for awhile. I'm so relieved.

THE END

My wife was with me, and subsequently we had the following conversation:

What the hell is it with women and eyelashes?

Because women would kill for eyelashes like yours.

WHY THOUGH?

Because we're crazy.

...things are looking good.

Even if your vision failed, you would still see by virtue of a fine mind.

for retinal hemorrhaging in my right eye, plus cataract surgery, which was pretty much nothin'; felt like the machine was 3-D printing a contact lens onto my eye.

I lost all vision in my left eye nearly 13 years ago; had surgery on Election Day 2012 to repair the detached retina, but it didnt take. (After the symptoms started eight months earlier, I couldn't give it the attention it needed because I had no insurance.)

At least I can tell people I've had needles in my right eye and my left's been taken out of its socket. It's fun to see their reactions.

It's a scary thing.

My problem developed soon after the cataract surgery. Blind spot in central vision of left eye. I've had type 1 diabetes for over 30 years, and they were blaming the retinal problems on the diabetes. This doesn't sound right to me because I've been preventatively monitored by a retina surgeon every six months for a few decades, and my a1c, while not perfect, has not been heinous.

Also, I'm reading that retina problems can be a complication of cataract surgery, and I don't think it's just a coincidence that this occurred shortly after the surgery.

I don't know what I would do without insurance. Those Eylea shots are about $3,000 a pop!!!

but the last time I looked at the MediCal statement (a couple of years ago), it cane to $800-something. They probabl get a better deal through MediCal than through private insurance.

Mine started with a huge floater, which started becomig a "window shade" black spot a few months later. That gradually got lower and lower before I had the surgery through some kind of state emergency insurance.

They tested me for diabetes early in the process. I was okay there, assuming "borderline pre-diabetic" isn't much to worry about. (I cut back on sugary foods, but there ain't no way in hell I'm givin' up Dr Pepper.)

I had the wavy lines before I got diagnosed with retinal bleeding. I kept the Amsler grid on my fridge for years, always looking to be sure the symptom didn't come back.

You might want to ask your eye doctor if a glasses prescription with prisms might help if the wavy lines don't go away.

Not the same problem as you, but I ended up with slightly double vision after the problem I had in 2000. The quack told me I didn't have a problem. I knew what I was seeing, or how I was seeing, and ended up going to the Low Vision Center of Ohio. The eye doctor who saw me there tested my vision and determined that yes, indeed, I was seeing an object, and also a partial view of the object. She prescribed new glasses with prisms in the lenses. They solved the vision problem. I got everything free, and I loved her. She was kind, compassionate and knowledgeable. She saved my sanity.

My husband's uncle mentioned that he had prisms in his glasses, and then didn't need them any more, but he didn't know why he needed that kind of prescription. If he'd remembered, he would have been glad to tell me all about it

Hang in there! I'm so happy for your good news

They had me look at the Amsler grid in the retina office today, and the lines were perfectly straight! (this was without my reading glasses on).

I'm seeing the wavy lines and jumbled letters on TV chyrons without my reading glasses on, and on my desktop PC WITH my reading glasses on.

I made a December appointment with my regular ophthalmologist....I'm giving it some time to see if it clears up.

Hard to believe you need three different doctors for one eye!

I'll enquire about the prisms.

Thanks again, Marthe.
