Woman, 68, arrested after 7 Great Danes left in van; 2 die, 3 euthanized, 1 in critical condition

MADISON, Wis. — A 68-year-old woman was arrested after officers found seven Great Danes confined in a van in what police described as deplorable conditions, leading to multiple canine deaths, according to the Madison Police Department’s city-wide notable calls list. Officers responded to a welfare check for dogs in distress on the 400 block of Science Drive shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday and found the woman with seven Great Danes in her van with no access to air, food or water, police said. The dogs were allegedly left in the vehicle since about 10:30 a.m..

Two of the dogs were dead at the scene, while four others were taken to an emergency veterinary clinic. Three of the surviving dogs were euthanized due to their conditions. A fifth dog, initially in the custody of another person who had been told to take it to a veterinarian, collapsed in the clinic parking lot. The dog was seized and remains alive. This dog is in critical condition. The last dog was placed into custody of a dog breeder. Police reported the woman said she left the seven dogs in the van when she left for work earlier that morning. The investigation continues with the assistance of animal control.

The woman was tentatively charged with five felony counts of mistreatment of animals causing death and two counts of mistreatment of animals. Anyone who has information about this incident, or any other information in reference to animals being abused, is encouraged to contact the Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014. I can’t type what I feel towards people who do this without getting kicked off DU. Humans suck, quite often lately.

I can't imagine leaving seven dogs in a hot car in a parking lot.

I hope she is never allowed to have another pet or a child.
