2. It's that balance that makes it work for me. A lot of early animations are a little disturbing. The Out of the Inkwell .

... animations were that way, though not to this degree, to me.These are the beginnings of animation and the creators were charting new territory with no boundaries. Some of the earliest pre-mouse Disney was this way, too.

...that whole "rubber hose" animation thing.

When you add in surreal and macabre happenings, like in "Swing You Sinners"...hoo boy.
