(26,974 posts)I just look for the yellow spot on the bottom, and then thump them. If the thump sounds like thumping your head, its not ripe. If it sounds like your stomach, its mushy. If it sounds like thumping your chest, its just ripe.
We have watermelons going bad in the patch now because we can't eat them all, and friends have said--No more! Chickens and goats love them.
