Supertramp's writer of " "Goodbye Stranger" died - Rick DAVIES

Last edited Mon Sep 8, 2025, 01:24 AM - Edit history (1)

I've never been up with the latest things so have liked a song when it crosses my path and Goodbye Stranger's music, not lyrics, did its earworm thing on me in those decades past, but I never bothered to find out what group, who, what. Then a couple of years ago this middle aged-plus matrimony played it on the jukebox and it captivated me. It took months for it to pop up in the rotation for me to do a Shazam ID on it. It's got all the musical tricks that work for me - melody above all, obsessive OCD repetition, counterpoint ... After played it many times I got around to checking out the lyrics and was confirmed in my prejudice against lyrics for their ability to be about whatever, in this case licentiousness. But am not such a prude, just "sheltered" haha at this late age!1

Rick Davies, Supertramp Co-Founder Who Wrote and Sang ‘Bloody Well Right’ and ‘Goodbye Stranger,’ Dies at 81

Rick Davies, one of the two co-founders, frontmen and chief songwriters of the British band Supertramp, which evolved from a progressive-rock group into an unexpected chart-topping ensemble with the album “Breakfast in America,” has died after a long battle with cancer, the band confirmed in a statement. He was 81

Davies, who wrote and sang such Supertramp hits as “Goodbye Stranger” and “Bloody Well Right,” had a deeper and less-distinctive voice than his erstwhile partner, Roger Hodgson, who wrote and sang the band’s biggest hit, “The Logical Song.” Yet it was he who continued the band after Hodgson split in 1983 over a variety of disputes, which began with creative differences but grew to include songwriting royalties and other matters, that carried on in court as recently as last month. ....

started to appreciate them much more over the last few years. They were like no other band. Excellent songwriting.

Oh, I'd heard this The Logical Song too, just learned the title and the other fellow. The lyrics are not filthy anyway!

The closest I got to liking by group and multiple songs was the Beegees.

(from which 'Bloody Well Right' comes, though that was only the B-side to 'Dreamer' in the UK). Everything on it is good - this is the opener, 'School', in a live version:
