We didn't have AC, just a huge window fan mounted on 2x4s. Every spring when my parents put it in the window, my Mom warned us not to put our fingers in the blades. But it was okay to sing and talk into it.

Also, when I was a scientist teacher in the 80s, I had a desk fan in my classroom. I picked up a strobe light at a garage sale and used it when we were studying "waves". By adjusting the speed of the strobe, I could make the fan "slow down", reverse or even freeze!

We took it outside and, in the dark, lit up a reciprocating sprinkler with the strobe.
It doesn't stop the spray, but it looks like the water is in slow motion!

In the summer, I would tie a sheet to the handle of our floor fan and create what I called a 'wind tunnel,' and would lie on the carpet under the fluttering sheet trying not to sweat. Sometimes it worked.
