Faux pas
(15,683 posts)I had an early medical retirement due to injuries at work. Luckily I had a 33 1/3 pension to get me from age 49 until 62.

(40,490 posts)I tried Los Angeles and New York and came back to Delaware where I knew newspaper people. I hustled and got an entry job and then staff photographer for 20 years. I feel very lucky about that.
Then I ended up living longer than I thought I would.

(441 posts)When we were young we had goals we wanted to accomplish and as the reality of life took hold we modified our goals. I really didnt have any goals in life when I was in my teens and in my early 20s I realized working at K-Mart in a non-management position wasnt going to get me far so I joined the AF. After a year in the AF I knew I was in for the long haul and would.retire after 20 years but ended up serving 28 years before retiring. Early in my AF career, I set a goal of retiring in my home of Coronado, Ca and I did it. I saved and invested my money and inheriting some money from my parents after they died, I was able to buy a condo which I have now lived in since 2004.

It's been up and downhill ever since.
Starting in 1977 or so, I got involved in underground comics, and by the early 80s, I was working in movie/tv costume graphics; also played in several bands with vinyl records and later cds before there were downloads/streams; also mid-nineties web master, music video production, etc. In 1995, my band had a Columbia Records development deal with Sandy Pearlman (notable for being the producer of Blue Oyster Cult) producing, which did not work out. Long story short.
But at least I have a great son who is a way better artist than me, and a nice art collection.

(58,039 posts)That faded soon enough. After that, I toyed with the idea of following my dad into journalism, but he was such a giant of a figure in DC, I decided not to try to become Junior.
I eventually decided to just make it up as I went along, and have been doing that ever since.

(72,754 posts)Became a scientist, working 43 years.
Wanted to find a wife & partner. Been married 45 years.
Wanted to be a musician. Played in band for >30 years & made around $200k doing it.
So, things worked out pretty well.
We did want kids but couldn't have them. So there's one significant goal unreached.

(25,514 posts)With all the drugs going around in the late 60s and early 70s, I wasn't sure I'd survive. I just turned 70 in the fall. So I think I exceeded my expectations.

(25,128 posts)I got lucky with a few bumps along the way. Terrible first marriage which I escaped with no major damage to myself and never saw the guy again. Married again and going to celebrate my 36th wedding anniversary on Tuesday. And have a nice son despite him being on the autism spectrum. Having him set me on another road to getting my credential and also working with seniors. Funny how life takes you in unexpected directions.
