In 1975, I worked with this guy that turned me on to the Grateful Dead...

He was about 10 years older than me. Tall, good looking guy. He took me under his wing, and he hired me at my next two jobs as he progressed in his career. We became good friends, despite our age difference.

When he moved out of town, I remember that I went and visited him and his wife for a few days.

He was a cool cat. He died at age 51 in the early 2000s.

Anyway, he was at the below linked 1971 Dead show, and he used to rave about it.

I miss you Pete. Those were the days.

I pride myself on the fact that I have made friends with people my whole life, who were either older, younger, or different than me.

when i homeschooled my kids, everyone, and i mean everyone, asked- what about socialization?
me- school is where kids go to get un-socialized. to only get along w kids their own age, and mostly, their own demographic. my kids learned to get along w all kinds of ppl.
they got on just as well w adults as other kids.
(of course, what they rly meant was- where will they learn to walk in straight lines, keep their mouths shut, and follow the rules.)

btn those days and the fact the we lived in 1 of the most diverse zipcodes in the country, they dont have a prejudiced bone in their bodies.

i live where i live cuz when i 1st moved to the city, the hood i lived in was 1 that had been ‘flipped’ when brown ppl started moving in. the folks who hadnt fled were some of the most bitter ppl i’d ever known, til now. proto-magats.
i figured this hood couldnt b flipped. bonus was that it was cheap, cuz brown ppl. lovely old houses and big yards. still cheap compared to the more ‘desirable’ areas.
shops of all kinds, restaurants from everywhere, and more miguels and mohammads than brandons and barbies.
my kids r citizens of the world. middle kid is in nyc, and perfectly at home.

i dont think i’d have dared to homeschool in my small hometown. chgo is so full of museums and culture, parks w good kids programs, architecture. 1 big classroom.
