Running out of money very fast.
I'm good to drive until 2029 and would have to give it up anyway.
My feet and hands are numb now; little sensation left.
I wonder how long I'll go on like this?
Its just me and my Missy cat now.
She's happy about it because I am here all of the time now. One positive thing about it anyway!
*sigh*

(19,881 posts)I help do small household repairs (and I'm pretty lame both in body and ability), I'll take people shopping or to appointments, we offer laptop repairs/replacements, phone calls and check-ins.
Check with your local senior center or council on aging (sometimes called an Area Agency on Aging). One resource might be the "Eldercare Locator" (https://eldercare.acl.gov/Public/Index.aspx).
Unfortunately this evil administration is cutting federal services, especially in our communities. Depending on your state you should be able to continue to find state/local resources.

(21,768 posts)That is who is helping me out here as I have no one and poverty level income.
Still have some savings however but I am no millionaire.

(21,768 posts)The Honda dealer would not buy it from me.
I was fearing it would be a total loss frankly.
A different used auto dealer in town bought it from me for $14,000.00+.
I had to crack into what is left in my IRA to pay off the $20,000.00 lien on it, so that is gone now too.
It isn't all bad.
No debts now.

(13,028 posts)My moment of relief comes when I realize my children are grown and gone. I can imagine what families with dependent children are having to face to get by. It won't be easy or pretty.

(21,768 posts)My MAGA relative has five kids under the age of 12.
I was told they were building a house that was quite fancy.
That plan resulted in the apparent purchase of a 10 acre lot that has nothing on it now but a plastic table and a bar-b-que pit.
Tough times indeed for too many out there.
I never thought I'd see the day that I could no longer afford a car but new ones are close to $40K these days.
So, I had to let go or face losing the house it seemed.

(13,028 posts)If you live close to things it won't be too bad. Otherwise, not having transportation can be isolating.
Best of luck to you. Maybe the trash pile in our White House will suffer a lightning bolt on his bald spot.

(21,768 posts)Not much transportation here sorry to say.
A local senior citizen place is arranging for me to get to two medical appts. I have coming up very soon.
I don't know what else to do.
I have a rather sketchy neighbor that has offered to help me out a bit.
None of my "friends" have offered to do a thing.
Friends?
pandr32
(13,028 posts)There may be connections there. You should have someone check on you regularly. See what they can offer.
Your sketchy neighbor may be okay--maybe not. I am sorry about your friends. Too many people are completely selfish.

(21,768 posts)If you think my MAGA sibling gives a damn, you are mistaken.
Hopes for me to die so the house will belong to himself.
That won't be happening regardless of what happens to me.
It will be a huge mess when I am dead and gone.
Very sad isn't it?
As for friends, if I don't have a $20 bill for one of them, its farewell loser.

(13,028 posts)We've dropped many former friends and family due to MAGA and/or indifference. Our neighbors are a mixed bag. None come to visit, but some do wave.
It is sad to see what has happened to cause so much divisiveness. Underlying issues were always there but social norms kept many from spouting off. The norms have been gutted. It is hard to even enter a store without overhearing nasty stuff or seeing some MAGA hat.
We are a community, though. Here at DU.
Don't give up on getting someone to check in. Maybe you can make a deal with one of your lazy friends. A call exchange or a text. Just to make sure you are okay.

(21,768 posts)It doesn't work w/numb hands.
I'm able to type still as I was once 100 wpm in my day working as a typist.
I can still touch type!

(13,028 posts)Perhaps you can call a senior center to see if there is some help available. I am assuming you have a phone land-line.

(1,147 posts)I live in rural Colorado where there is no public transportation to speak of. However the state of Colorado and Medicaid got together and now Medicaid will allow low income folks to get an unlimited taxi rides to get medical care. They also allow two non medical rides a week so people can go to the grocery store or the library or wherever.
Also, my county has a low cost ride service that most local residents here qualify for. Google the name of your county and "transportation." Can't hurt to check.
I'm sorry you had to give up your car. I had to give up on my truck when its repair bills got higher than what it was worth. Being without a vehicle makes doing even the smallest thing which involves transportation feel impossible. I hope you will be able to work some things out.

(21,768 posts)I checked into this and the people doing this called ME a fraud and a LIAR for god's sake because the other Senior Citizen place that has helped me in the past is there.
They didn't like this and claimed I was rich and get a grant because I am disabled and a widow with a very low income.
I kind of hate this place at times!
Big zero if you aren't rich in California these days.

(294 posts)My brother, 60, chose to live in his car and abandon his rental in June 2024. He is a four shot a day diabetic and he was living in his car because he was too disabled to work due to the diabetes. In August 2024, he abandoned his car in a park in Pennsylvania and checked into a mental health facility. I flew him to Spokane a month later and we are in the process of getting him on disability, so far so good. Right now he lives in a UGM shelter. I believe his car, a very nice car, is still sitting abandoned in the park because I guess the bank didn't want it back. Nothing is easy anymore unless you have a lot of money...

(21,768 posts)They knew the place that sold it to me was crooked.
Luckily, the place I sold it to drove me home and I called them when when I got home and told them what I thought of them and asked them IF they were still financing loans for their customers to purchase a used car from them.
They would not answer me, nope. I figure they are still financing loans with this crooked place.
I was going to return it to the bank but decided my credit was more important than they were, so to hell w/them!
SHAME ON THEM and your brother is lucky to have YOU!

(21,768 posts)I know of several others here that have been robbed.
One of them very recently bought a SILVERADO truck and the transmission was shot on it. It went in for warranty repair and they got it back after 90 days and it was not fixed.
Sickening MAGA frauds!
They do not belong in business!

(18,122 posts)It sounds like, in your case, it was the right one. As an older woman, living in a small town, where driving to everything is required, I'm working thru just how I'm going to manage that in the next 5 years or so, when my kids begin badgering me about giving up the car keys.
I hope it works out and you have alternatives you can utilize.

He left his lawn mower in the back yard and now I have to have it taken to the dump!
Didn't even bother to contact me.

(1,287 posts)I became disabled and I couldn't afford the car maintenance and sky high CA insurance for just liability. I've been riding the bus for years. It takes a little extra work, but I no longer have a empty check book on the day after pay day.

(21,768 posts)Some go 8-10 miles I've read.
One of these could solve my problem as the small town I am in isn't 10 miles long or wide either.
Any knowledge or advise re: this option anyone else?
Glad you can hop on and off a bus. I cannot do that any more, too wrecked for that these days.

(1,287 posts)I checked into that a few years ago.
