Rich people wanting even more attention and looking frankly ridiculous?
Before you tell me it's for charity, why don't the rich invitees simply donate whatever small fortune they've spent on their get-up?

(1,432 posts)...but rather loaned, from vintage collections, or one-offs, couture made for the theme by some of the greatest artists in their field.
The tables are sponsored by major donors who put forth an invite list; invitees need to be approved by Anna Wintour. Its primary beneficiary is the Costume Institute.
The gala is not to everyone's taste. But each year represents a theme that is often a countercultural message from the artistic world. This year's event highlights Black dandyism. With its overtones of queer joy and creativity, centering a tradition of Black masculinity, the Met Gala offers another version of what values are important, influential, and worthy of nurturing.
This year especially, that's everything the Trumpists despise.

(72,594 posts)i mean, is art of any kind useful? only if u mean, does it make us more human?
i think in the past its been a parade of $$$$$. but its becoming something else in a time we rly need something else.
It takes the current cultural obsession with gender norms, and turns it inside out, playfully, manifesting through some of the most famous people in popular culture, and other people far less so.
And really, while a fair number of the people invited are very well off financially, many are just...not. And because all invitees must be approved by Anna Wintour, no one can just buy their way into the Met Gala.
After all, it's not Mar-a-lago!

(16,660 posts)I also like that it promotes art. It's just so damned elitist.
The movie and tele award shows bug me, too.
My problem, I think, is that I despise the ultra-rich and all of their trimmings.

Beautiful art is uplifting!
And challenging art...
challenges in different ways.

(26,740 posts)Anna Wintour (VOGUE editor) and Heidi Klum looked good, but that was about it.
My practical nurse self always wonders, with some of the very voluminous garments, how the hell do you go to the bathroom?

Wasn't there a woman last year that had to be carried to her seat because her dress was so tight? So many of participants, especially the women, become little more than ornaments.

(72,594 posts)ive done a fair amount of fundraising in my time, including arts orgs. ppl need a focus, a reason to give AT THIS MOMENT. and honestly, id bet good money that many check ARE written by ppl who wouldnt b caught dead in some of those get ups, and who dont go to fancy parties. there r many who just quietly support the cause. and many who write small checks that add up.
this kind of event gives a lot of exposure, a lot of pr without which orgs like the met wd not survive.
its just how human brains work, and thats y they do it.

(21,544 posts)I'd have hoped I made it through my art making.
I'm spiritual and partly a material girl. Love some very cool clothes. Oh a couple diamonds, and rubies really just some. I once held a diamond & ruby necklace Woah It was for a jewelry brochure at our photo shoot catalouge company. It was gogeous!!!
Also ome gorgeous jewelry, w/wo gems, in 22 k gold! Even 24k It's very delicate!)
An extra cool apt.
I don't need, want brand items.
Vacations back to Paris (which was a gifted trip). 2 overnight in the Hotel at the Grand Canyon ("only" there in the afternoon, it was still amazing). Back to San Juan, PR. Back to San Francisco. Finally get to Chicago! Maaaybe Egypt - The Pyramids! The Blue Mosque in Istanbul. (after their dictator's gone)
Besides all that -- I'd figure out best high yielding bank stuff etc. Because....
I'd have so much more money to give away to people and places in need! Charities, food banks, lower income schools (like art supplies, musical instruments), some non-profits, disaster relief, etc. It... I would have hoped it would have been great.
The best of course would be the transformation of our USA into a much more equitable society!

(52,337 posts)Here's what I think:
1. Bad Bunny's purse looks WAY too much like a bowling ball bag. Sorry dude, no one should ever carry a bowling ball bag unless there's a bowling ball in it.
2. Not digging on all the trains.
3. Serena Williams' dress looks way too much like a down-filled coat.
4. Lots of guys wearing dresses. None of them are wearing eye shadow. You need both to make this look work.
5. Cynthia Erivo showed up with a completely shaved head. French wide-leg trousers would have worked well with this look. And seriously ladies? Shaved head and no makeup - or not-intense makeup - doesn't scream "I'm fierce," it yells "I'm on chemo." If you're going for a look you need to take it all the way.
6. Anne Hathaway looked good.
7. Teyana Taylor's outfit harkens back to the Carol Burnett "Gone with the Wind" parody.
8. Anna Wintour, the Gatekeeper of Fashion, looked...well, kinda bland.
