Curiously, Bagdad is a genuine Route 66 ghost town in the Mojave desert and the original Bagdad Cafe blew away with the rest of Bagdad; I believe a single palm tree planted next to the razed train station is all that remains.

The film was shot at what was then the Sidewinder Cafe in Newberry Springs, California, 50 miles west of the original site of Bagdad on old U.S. 66. They changes the name of the Sidewinder Cafe to Bagdad Cafe to capitalize on the notoriety and propagate a lot of quirkiness.
