Last week, the Pentagon abruptly canceled a planned deployment of roughly 4,000 troops to Poland, halting a rotation by the Army’s 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team. The move blindsided lawmakers, came after preparations were already underway, and prompted bipartisan criticism over the lack of consultation. Rep. Mike Rogers, the Republican Chair of the House Armed Services Committee, blasted the Pentagon’s decision, warning that Congress would inflict “pain” on the Pentagon if it continued to draw down troops deployed to Europe.
The cancellation of the Poland deployment, along with a halted deployment to Germany, was part of Trump’s order to reduce American military presence in Europe by about 5,000 personnel. He had earlier made it clear that he was reducing the number of American troops in Germany to punish Chancellor Friedrich Merz for saying that the United States is “humiliating” itself in Iran.
