Rural Women Need Livable Wages
This past week marked Equal Pay Day. The day of the year symbolizing when the average womans pay finally equals the average mans pay for the previous year. Its usually around 90 extra days.
In other words, American women in the U.S. earn about $0.84 for every dollar that a man earns. Its even less if youre a seasonal or part-time worker which account for nearly ⅓ of all working women. And for women in tribal communities or non-white women, its even less than that.
On the heels of many news reports predicting that women are somewhere near three times as likely to have their work automated by new AI technologies, we have to be cautious about what AI could potentially do to millions in the workforce. These are traditionally women-dominated roles like receptionists, clerks, legal aides, and office workers.
No one knows how the evolution of AI will shake out for anyone just yet, but what we do know is that women are an integral part of the American workforce and big players in the local economies of small towns and rural areas. Theyre mothers, caretakers, and small business owners and right now, theyre struggling with massive cost of living increases.
