Why Marjorie Taylor Greene is defending Obamacare subsidies - WaPo

In the government-shutdown standoff between Republicans and Democrats, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has surprised many observers: The Republican firebrand from Georgia is siding with Democrats in their insistence on continuing the pandemic-era temporary expansion of Affordable Care Act premium subsidies.
But its surprising that this should be surprising. Greenes views might seem iconoclastic compared with traditional GOP attitudes toward Obamacare, but they reflect a stance toward government support for middle- and working-class families that is the norm for recently elected, more populist Republicans. This burgeoning development has already turned much of the GOP away from its decades-long suspicion of government power.

Trump has always campaigned on a vigorous use of government power to make America great again, but overall, his first term hewed to the post-Reaganite Republican playbook. This time, however, he is aggressively implementing policies in line with his rhetoric. Tariffs. Unprecedented intervention in the workings of colleges and universities. Deals that give the federal government ownership shares in businesses. Many Republicans would be screaming socialism had a Democrat tried any of these.
Nor has Trump displayed a uniform opposition to big-ticket government spending. Yes, he has found ways to reduce the federal workforce. But he has always refused to push for cuts to Social Security or Medicare benefits, key planks in the Republican budget orthodoxy less than a decade ago. He recently expressed a willingness to negotiate with Democrats over the continuation of some perhaps, most of the Obamacare subsidies that Greene backs.

Greenes view on Obamacare subsidies is shared by many frontline members worried about losing their seats. Indeed, the presidents pollster, Tony Fabrizio, sent out a memo this year arguing that failure to extend the subsidies could cost the party the House.
