Haitians 'can't stay here,' DHS says following Supreme Court decision

Source: USA Today

Updated June 26, 2026, 4:44 p.m. ET

The estimated 350,000 Haitians living in the United States under Temporary Protected Status should leave and can get a $2,600 bonus if they depart quickly instead of being deported, Trump administration officials said.

The Supreme Court on June 25 ruled President Donald Trump can end TPS for Haitians who sought sanctuary in the United States after natural disasters and political unrest in the Caribbean island nation. The ruling also covers about 6,000 people from Syria, which endured a devastating civil war from 2011 to 2024.

"These people have been on notice for nine years that this day is coming," James Percival, general counsel of the Department of Homeland Security, said June 26 on Fox News. "So what we would say now is that it's closing time, which means you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here."

Many immigration rights groups expect the Trump administration will also end TPS for about 1 million people from other countries living in the United States, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans.

They have proven to be good for the economy. They will be our loss all because of a racist administration and Supreme Court. Giving a man like Trump the power to decide who can come to this country and who cannot, based on skin color, is a huge mistake. I'm no lawyer, but I doubt the Constitution gives a president that right. If we had people other than Republican sycophants in Congress, they could quickly pass a law protecting TPS, which would result in more lawsuits but would buy some time until the midterms when we might have a less corrupt Congress willing to stand up to Trump and the racist Supreme Court.

They even get free health care, having a paler shade of skin.

If these folks are sent back to Haiti, they'll be at the mercy of the armed gangs that control a good deal of the nation. I expect hundreds, if not thousands, of them will be killed.
If ever there was a need for TPS to be continued, this is it.
But their black, so Trump doesn't give a shit, and will deport them with SC blessing.
