Striking hotel workers brought their demonstration right to the entrance of Seattle Stadium on Friday, with unionized Hilton staff picketing outside the facility just hours before the U.S. Men's National Team faces Australia in one of the most highly anticipated fixtures of the FIFA World Cup group stage.
The walkout by Unite Here Local 8, which represents roughly 7,000 hospitality employees throughout Washington and Oregon, commenced on Thursday outside the Embassy Suites by Hilton Seattle Downtown Pioneer Square, located a five-minute walk from the stadium.
Workers were present at the venue itself on match day as tens of thousands of supporters arrived for the noon local kickoff. This follows hospitality employees at SoFi Stadium threatening to stage a walkout days before the World Cup.
One protester, Aspen Demare, a bartender at the hotel's Zephyr restaurant, spoke with Mirror U.S. Sports at the head of the picket line at Seattle Stadium on Friday morning. She was clear about her reasons for being there.
