Microsoft issues emergency Windows 11 fix after computers fail to shut down
Source: Independent
Microsoft has issued an urgent fix for Windows 11 after a recent security update caused several major issues with the operating system.
One of the bugs prevented some systems from shutting down or hibernating properly, causing computers to reboot rather than swich off.
Another problem prevented users from logging in via a remote desktop, while another caused Microsoft Outlook to crash.

The Outlook problem is also far more widespread than the shut down issue, however no fix has yet been issued.

The only reason Windows 11 is more "popular" is because microsoft didn't give users much choice- update to it on your current machine or buy a new machine. The reason 40% are still using MS 10 is a new machine is out of budget for many, and their perfectly good older machine can't run MS 11 (it was designed that way). Beginning to sound like 11 is turning into m e.

(220 posts)on the public with this bait and switch. I had purchased a Windows 10 machine back in 2018 but was told 11 didn't support the processor as the new roll-out was about to happen in 2021. Of course I gave them the middle finger, because their excuse was bogus. I eventually installed 11, using a nerdy work-around which involved deleting some code on their installation software and everything worked as it should through today.

I have a brand new Windows 11 machine, haven't taken it out of the box!

(22,107 posts)It has a CDRW on it and I watch the news, youtube, etc. on it.
I realize there are security issues with Windows 7 so I use my Thinkpad with Windows 10 on it.
I don't want Windows 11!
Glad to know I am not alone.

(9,874 posts)The CPU speed was 90Mhz and it ran Win 3.1 just fine. Pretty solid machine, really zero problems that I can remember. Used it till 2002 and built a computer to replace it.

(9,874 posts)I built a computer in late 2016 (done a couple of upgrades over the years) that's gaming quality and I was told from the get-go in updates that it would not run Win 11.
Fine with me,I don't want it anyway.

(4,388 posts)Windows 11 is focused on pushing AI into everything you do, and it monitors your activities as well. That, plus ads displayed on the Start menu panel, make it pretty apparent that the current management of Microsoft view user information as their product and users as a resource to be mined.
I'm considering a move to Linux off of Win11. I've resisted because my energy level is limited these days and I have other things I'd rather focus on. On the current trajectory, however, I may lose patience with Microsoft entirely.

(4,922 posts)But, due to warnings that security fixes would no longer be supported, I upgraded to a Windows 11 compatible Dell. I only get refurbished machines because the new ones are way too expensive.
So far so good. I just did the latest updates yesterday. Seemed to go just fine.

(5,462 posts)I am in the process of setting up a Linux machine, and running Windows 10, 8, 7, and XP as virtual machines, and using my old bought and paid for software. I have no use for subscription-based software.

I'm two years into this adventure and even though I was nervous at first, it's been a very rewarding process. And quite satisfying to give MS a big middle finger.

So last fall we did a search to see if there was another tax preparation software that didn't require Windows so I wouldn't have to pay for 11. We discovered Tax Act which can be used online for not only personal taxes, but also Trusts (and businesses).
Last week I set up the accounts to do both online from my laptop. This week I'll start entering numbers to see how it goes. I suspect it will be fine and I will be thrilled not to have to deal with the Virtual Machine or Microsoft again!

(40,396 posts)I won't touch anything Microsoft, Apple, or Android unless someone is paying me.
Linux does everything Apple or Windows does except run software that's been deliberately crippled so it won't run on Linux machines.
If I was forced to endure advertising or AI "helpers" on my computer, my television, or my phone I'd go total Luddite and abandon them entirely.
