US Seizes Oil Tanker Off the Coast of Venezuela

US forces have intercepted and seized a sanctioned oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, according to people familiar with the matter, a move that marks a serious escalation of tensions between the two countries.
The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. State oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA and Venezuela’s oil and information ministries didn’t immediately reply to requests for comment.
The seizure may make it much harder for Venezuela to export its oil, as other shippers are now likely to be more reluctant to load its cargoes. Most Venezuelan oil goes to China, usually through intermediaries, at steep discounts owing to sanctions risk.

PDVSA, the state oil company, works with a handful of international partners including Houston-based Chevron Corp. to drill in many parts of the country. Under the current arrangement, Chevron receives a percentage of the oil produced by its joint ventures with PDVSA. A license issued by the US Treasury exempts the US company from sanctions.

So, not real "sanctions", if you exclude a major company from your own country. More like a protection racket.

That's the only explanation I have heard. If there is not something like that, this is an act of piracy.

25. Maye we should not be so quick to hop on this story

While it's easy to attack Trump as a pirate for this seizure, it appears the whole story is a lot more complicated.

Google information about the ship and this incident where you will find the story is long and twisted.

It seems as though this same vessel has been for years involved in some kind of international trafficking in crude oil that was designed to avoid sanctions on Iran and Russia, a scheme that went on for years and is still going on.

It also now appears that the ship was broadcasting on ship warning radio channels one location when, in fact, it was located 100 miles away, travelling in a direction different from that being broadcast, clearly in an attempt to avoid detection.

Which raises the question of just how deeply is the Venezuelan government involved in what appears to be international petroleum smuggling and how long have they been doing it and to whose benefit?

I hate Trump as much as most and more than a lot but it appears in this incident there is a background to the story that we need to acknowledge.
