Bolsonaro ordered to start serving 27-year prison sentence for Brazil coup plot
Source: BBC
Brazil's Supreme Court has ordered that right-wing former president Jair Bolsonaro begin serving his prison sentence of 27 years and three months for plotting a coup after he lost the last election.
Justice Alexandre de Moraes on Tuesday ruled that the case had reached its final judgement and that no further appeals were possible.
...
He will begin serving his sentence in a federal police jail cell in the capital, Brasilia, where he has been detained since Saturday after being deemed a flight risk and removed from home detention.
At a hearing on Sunday, Bolsonaro admitted trying to open his ankle monitor with a soldering iron until he "came to his senses", court documents show.

More like he was unable to get it open but damaged it during the attempt so that there was no way to hide it.
It is amazing that Brazil can manage to understand that the person who orchestrated a coup attempt is guilty of a crime and must be put in prison while the United States can't figure that out to save their asses or their country.
Wild, eh?

So glad that Merrick Garland was so methodical in getting all those convictions on the people who organized and ran the coup.

Bolsonaros lawyers said he wasnt trying to flee (notwithstanding earlier efforts to find a country to escape to) but rather, the former Brazilian president felt unwell because of the medications he was on.
So according to his own defenders, this guy took a soldering iron to his ankle monitor because some drugs left him confused.
And it was around this time that the story got even weirder.
Trump says he spoke to Bolsonaro last night and plans to meet with him soon

......Of course, given the Brazilian was on house arrest and poised to begin a lengthy prison sentence, it was far from clear how, exactly, Trump intended to hang out with him. For all intents and purposes, it would suggest that Trump either was going to make a previously unannounced trip to Brazil, or the American president expected Bolsonaro to make his way to the U.S.
But wait, theres more.

So lets recap:
Friday night: Bolsonaros son summons a crowd to their family home.
Later Friday night: Bolsonaro takes a soldering iron to his ankle monitor.
Saturday mornin[g/b]: Bolsonaro is re-arrested.
Saturday afternoon: Trump says he spoke to Bolsonaro the night before and planned to see the Brazilian leader in the very near future.
Monday afternoon: The White House isnt sure whether Trump actually had the conversation he publicly referenced two days earlier.
I can appreciate on a personal level how easy it is to grow inured to the madness surrounding our incumbent American president. But even by Trump standards, this ones a doozy.

So Garland's defenders claimed. They smeared another country to defend an incompetent official. Now this shows they couldn't have been more wrong. They knew nothing about Brazil, but that didn't stop them from trashing a country, its people, and its legal system.
