BELEM, Brazil - World governments agreed on Saturday to a compromise climate deal at the COP30 conference in Brazil that would boost finance for poor nations coping with global warming but omit any mention of the fossil fuels driving it.
In securing the accord, countries attempted to demonstrate global unity in addressing climate change impacts even after the world's biggest historic emitter, the United States, declined to send an official delegation.
But the agreement, which landed in overtime after two weeks of contentious negotiations in the Amazon city of Belem, also exposed rifts between wealthy and developing nations, as well as between those governments with opposing views on oil, gas and coal. After gaveling the deal through, COP30 President Andre Correa do Lago acknowledged the talks had been tough. "We know some of you had greater ambitions for some of the issues at hand," he said.
The European Union had been the main holdout for language on a transition away from fossil fuels, but ultimately agreed to drop it after a coalition of countries including top oil exporter Saudi Arabia said it was off-limits.

(11,552 posts)Without deals on factory farms and fossil fuels it is absolutely pointless.
Let's be clear that science and climate change doesn't care about your politics or profit margins.
It is relentless and unyielding to your feelings and opinions..
It is happening.

(10,375 posts)The link below is over a week old. I missed it in the usual flood of news.
BELEM, Brazil, Nov 11 (Reuters) - California Governor Gavin Newsom assured an audience at the COP30 climate summit in Brazil that his state would continue to prioritize green technology, while blasting U.S. President Donald Trump's "dumb" decision to reverse the federal government's course on climate action.
Newsom, widely considered a leading candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, also sounded alarm bells at the Republican Trump's policies, calling them threats to rule of law and democracy.
Making several appearances at the annual climate summit on Tuesday in the Amazonian city of Belem, Newsom took every opportunity to slam Trump's attacks on the fast-growing clean energy economy. He said Republicans were ceding the fast-growth market to China, which "will dominate in the next great global industry."
"The United States of America is as dumb as we want to be on this topic, but the state of California is not. And so we are going to assert ourselves, we're going to lean in, and we are going to compete in this space." A strident political foe of Trump, Newsom has for months been teasing a run for the White House in 2028.
