Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene says she will resign, after fallout with Trump

Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia announced on Friday night that she will resign her seat in the House of Representatives, with her last day in office being Jan. 5.
Greenes announcement, in a video and statement posted on X, followed a dramatic break with President Donald Trump, which she cited as playing a role in her decision to leave Congress in the middle of her third term.
Green, 51, had been a leading supporter of Trump and a prominent figure in his Make America Great Again, or MAGA, movement, while sparking controversy for promoting conspiracy theories and using extreme rhetoric. But she recently faced harsh criticism from Trump, who called her a traitor and a lunatic, for, among other things, backing a bill to compel the Department of Justice to release investigative files about Jeffrey Epstein, the notorious sex offender.
Greene also has criticized the Republican president for what prioritizing meeting with foreign leaders at the expense of paying attention to the needs of Americans. Trump on Nov. 14 said that he was withdrawing his support and endorsement of Greene, whom he called Wacky in a Truth Social post, and said that he would fully support the right person if they challenged her in the Republican primary next year.

(1,110 posts)"Take your money and run" to Georgia to run for Governor maybe.
Just like all the other DC Republican Politicians, it has been reported that she used insider information in the past number of years to amass a small fortune. She entered the House worth around 700K? and she is leaving with a reported 25 Million? During Trump's first occupation of the White House, during covid, and these past 10+ months there have been some ludicrous FORTUNES made by the already rich, the wannabe rich, Politicans and the well connected....they don't even try to keep their grifting/looting secret any more.....

(16,865 posts)I have no illusions as to this woman and I have not believed her recent change of heart one iota. It would take a very, very long time for her to redeem herself in my eyes. I still remember her treatment of Biden, and the many reporters that she was ugly and rude toward.
But I don't think she would give up a seat now in order to run for Governor. She would want to continue to have the platform in Congress to start campaigning. Just my two cents...

They all were in lockstep, arm in arm, corruptly installing Trump into power, AND keeping him there.....day by day, year by year, for the last 9 years.....
Now they are finally all realizing they created a modern day Frankenstein's monster, and they lost control of him. In fact he is controlling all of them....

he protected her but once McCarthy was ousted and resigned she had no cover ..and when Jasmine Crockett, AOC ,and Jared Moskowitz turned Greene and her crazy talk into comedic punchlines, porn monitor/Trump ass-kisser Mike Johnson wanted her out..
her sudden transformation from Jewish space lasers to advocating for the release of the Epstein files and voicing her disdain for the shutdown prompted Trump to rip her to shreds on his social platform , inviting his violent MAGA militia to terrorize her into silence
and just like that she was done

She's resigning two days after she's eligible for her congressional pension. Her net worth has increased 10x, so she's made all the money she's going to out of being in Congress,
Now she has time to say "I'm not like all those other politicians. When they weren't working for you, but only themselves, I noped right out of there." She'll travel and do rallies to take her "outsider" message directly to the people. She'll start a podcast. "If only I were president, I could fix this. They don't care about you and your concerns, but I do."
And then, reluctantly, because no one else is looking out for the little guy, she'll agree to run. For you. For America.
Don't get me wrong, she's still a complete frickin' lunatic, and will be still in 2028. Even in that miles long statement she released she couldn't resist talking about Covid tyranny, so yeah, she's nuts. But she got a facelift and better clothes. She's learning how to moderate her speaking style to appeal to non Maga. She's running.

As to the common people, what did she do to help anybody but herself? She going to give back any of that insider trading money? All she did was enrich herself. I'd love to see how much of her income she has given pack to the "common people".
She is a phony, has always been a phony and will forever remain a phony.

She graduated from the University of Georgia, not nearly as dumb as she looks. She lives in an uber-red area and she is MAGA to the core. She wants to be queen of the MAGA, but I'm not sure they'll vote for a woman, even if it's her. At least not for president, maybe for governor or senator.
She's up to something.

(404 posts)I was thinking in terms of elections and a new congress being sworn in and that happens on Jan 3rd. Is she really going to take the oath on the 3rd just to resign 2 days later? Then it hit me what I was missing, this resignation is Jan 5th 2026, not post mid term Jan 5th 2027. That still sets up a special vacancy in that seat and a special election to fill it before the mid terms.

womanofthehills
(10,650 posts)I bet the death threats are horrific. The Republicans all want to murder each other. Someone from Turning Points (according to Candace) said she was supposed to be murdered - not Charlie but that she and Tucker were on the kill list. Anna of Young Turks says she gets lots of death threats & she is not suicidal and if shes killed, a certain country has been threatening her & to blame them. Kim Iverson said shes getting death threats, someone broke into her house while she was home and
shes not suicidal etc. Even Bill Maher says he has security.
Since Charlies death, house member security has been raised from $5,000 to $10,000 a month for security guards (expected to expire today) -but will be expanded Actually, $50,000 for 4 months. Everyone is freaked out after Charlie Kirk assignation.
House members also got $20,000 each to upgrade their house security cameras, etc
This is sick. Podcasters, journalists, representatives all need security now. Charlie Kirk traveled with 6 to 10 security guards and that didnt save him. When Kirk was on Bill Mauers he questioned Charlie about having so much security with him. Candace said he kept telling her they are going to kill me

(40 posts)I always thought that MTG was just a stupid woman, but I now see that shes actually very politically cunning and astute. She sees the writing on the wall and probably knows its going to get way worse for Trump and the republicans, so shes pivoting and positioning herself to run for higher office (probably president) when this over. Its probably smart of her to get off this sinking ship before things get crazy bad for republicans. Shes a horrible human being and would be a disastrous president, but shes been making politically savvy moves that may pay off for her. Time will tell.

ChicagoTeamster
(243 posts)That way they would have had less time to schedule an election to get her replacement. But, this still works out for a short term benefit. Dems should start sponsoring bills to clawback funding for companies that took their tax breaks and either didn't invest it in hiring or capital improvement or who raised prices beyond what was justified by Trump tariff costs. And, they should always phrase it as Trump tariff cost.
BumRushDaShow
(163,814 posts)There are 3 vacancies at the moment (+ 1 more once MTG leaves), so it's currently 219 - 213.
There is a (D) seat (TX) with a runoff election scheduled in December, an (R) seat with a special election also in December, a (D) seat (NJ) special election in April 2026, and finally MTG's seat's special election some time in February/March 2026 (which might end up with a further runoff election after that if no one gets greater than 50%).
So by the end of January, it could be 219 - 214 (assuming (R)s get the highly contested TN seat), and by the end of April, it would be 220 - 215.
IF (D)s could actually pick up the TN seat, then it would be 219 - 216.
ChicagoTeamster
(243 posts)BumRushDaShow
(163,814 posts)that it ended with a runoff, so that runoff election will happen in December (it's still a blue seat and will stay (D)).
The TN seat is a hope hope hope (it's a (R) district and (D)s are pumping a lot of $$$ into it to flip it). But obviously it ain't over 'till it's over (no counting those chickens)! That special election is also December.
Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) just got elected governor of NJ and just resigned her seat Nov. 20, and her election won't be until April. And finally MTG leaves Jan. 5, 2026 (and there is a time frame for when that special election will happen).
