Kansas City Chiefs coach responds to Trump's criticism of NFL kickoff rule: 'He has no idea what's going on'
Source: Independent
Kansas City Chiefs assistant head coach Dave Toub has brushed off President Trumps criticisms of recent changes to the NFLs kickoff rules.
He doesnt even know what hes looking at, Toub said at a press conference on Thursday, eliciting a laugh from the gathered reporters. He has no idea whats going on with the kickoff rule, so Im going to take that for what its worth. I hope he hears it.
Throughout this year, President Trump has railed against the leagues new kickoff rules that prevent the kicking team from moving forward until the ball lands or is caught by a returner on the opposing side.
During an interview earlier this month on The Pat McAfee Show, Trump said the new Dynamic Kickoff rules, first introduced last year, have made the game unromantic and are demeaning to football.

the ignorant orange slob has had to be front and center in our lives for ten years. I can still remember when we had a competent, compassionate President that just did his job well and you didnt even have to concern yourself with any nefarious bullshit, when it was a given your President was doing a good job for the American people and you didnt even have to think about it. I cant wait till we return to that.

He didnt have to money to be an NFL owner. None. The Maras, Hunts, and Rooneys would never let that happen. This is aside from his owning and somehow failing at casinos. He was still able to run a football league into the ground. That WAS rule numero uno with Rozelle. Jesus what has the NFL and ESPN become?
He also lost money selling red meat to Americans.

It allowed for the kicking team to be in full sprint when they reached the guy catching the ball. He had to decide whether to call a fair catch (and the ball would be placed where caught which kept him from not get clobbered by some guy running full sprint at him), or catch it and run.
Lots of injuries on the old style kickoffsincluding concussions.
Side note: In high school football, I was on a kicking team, and a defender clipped me from the side (threw his body at the side of my knee). Stretched the ligament badly. The knee swung inward and then back. No tear. But it gave me a sickening feeling in my stomach I'll never forget. I don't know how these NFL guys do it.

(562 posts)I know it was for punt, but I thought KO was either catch it and run or down it...

(13,360 posts)I guess because the ball gets there so much earlier than a punt, its not used very often but a fair catch is permitted on a kickoff (from what I read).

(1,545 posts)Dave Toub is the best special teams coach in the NFL. I'm a BEARS fan. He was with the BEARS during the Lovie Smith years. They always had outstanding special teams. Devin Hester didn't hurt.
He should've gotten more of a chance to be a head coach in the league. Very few special teams coaches get head coaching opportunities (John Harbaugh of the Baltimore Ravens is one). Teams want the hot offensive coordinator or the hot defensive coordinator when they're hiring a new head coach.
