Bodycam shows arrest of Alabama woman wearing penis costume at protest: 'This is a family town'
Source: AL.com
Newly released bodycam footage shows a Fairhope police colonel confronting and arresting a 61-year-old grandmother dressed in an inflatable penis costume during a protest last month.
The footage, provided to AL.com by Renea Gambles legal team, captures Col. Andrew Babb telling Gamble her costume would not be tolerated in a town that has values.
Im not going to sit here and argue with you, Babb says in the video. If my kids came by here to see this, how would I explain this?
[snip]
Babb replies, How would you explain to my children what you are supposed to be? This is a family town. Im not going to have someone out here dressed like this. Its abusive. He later adds, I would hate for her grandkids to see her like this.

It used to be the butthole of the US, but I'm thinking Abbott in TX is giving AL a run for its money.

(467 posts)It's in a mostly arch-conservative area with some very liberal types in the mix, there are lots of extremely rich/wealthy old families with big old estates on the water, lots of artsy-weirdo types (who may or may not have some of that money), white flighters who still rely on Mobile across for the bay of their income etc, out of state retirees, and good old rednecks. It's a beautiful town and it's no surprise that this kind of thing would come to a head there (so to speak). One thing it's never been exclusively is a "family town" - that's A part of it, but holy cow I have seen and heard of WILD stuff going on. I'm glad to see the resistance is still alive down there.

Fairhope was just like this at the time. A town of cliques and greed pretending to be moral.
Typical southern enclave. Smile to your face and then lay into you behind your back.

(39,688 posts)Yeah, I'm kind of liberal so I think it's cute and clever. But if a guy were to walk around Pittsburgh wearing a costume depicting female genitalia, maybe it wouldn't seem so funny. I don't know.
Maybe this lady needs to read the room, and have a little more respect for the local mores. Save the cute and provocative costumes for a private party atmosphere where you're among friends who get the joke, and everyone plays along.

Personally, I loved the costume! But can you imagine the hilarity that's going to erupt in that court room?
I'd do anything to be on that jury.
