Democrat Mikie Sherrill elected governor of New Jersey, defeating opponent who aligned with Trump

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — U.S. Rep. Mikie Sherrill on Tuesday was elected governor of New Jersey, shoring up Democratic control of a state that has been reliably blue in presidential and Senate contests but had shown signs of shifting rightward in recent years. Sherrill, a former Navy helicopter pilot and four-term member of Congress, defeated Jack Ciattarelli, who was endorsed by President Donald Trump.

The start of voting on Tuesday was disrupted after officials in seven counties received e-mailed bomb threats later determined by law enforcement to be unfounded, said the state’s top election official, Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way. A judge granted a one-hour extension at some polling places after Democrats made a request for three schools that received e-mailed bomb threats earlier Tuesday.

Sherrill, 53, offers some reassurance for moderates within the Democratic Party as they navigate the path forward for next year’s midterms. A former prosecutor and military veteran, Sherrill embodies a brand of centrist Democrats who aim to appeal to some conservatives while still aligning with some progressive causes. She campaigned on standing up to Trump and casting blame for voters’ concerns over the economy on his tariffs.

At Sherrill’s victory party, Democrats celebrated, framing the results Tuesday as a rebuke to the Trump agenda 10 months into his administration.

I read something about Ms. Sherrill that impressed me. I don't remember what, but it left me feeling positive.

You have to go somewhere else to get the numbers. They don't want to piss off their big advertizers.

Didn't Obama give her his support in a great speech? I remember hearing him and being so happy for that moment in time that he was still here and still fighting for us! The Obamas continue to be the greatest role models of a President and First Lady of my lifetime! I love them both so much for their service to our country!

As a NJ resident, I was very concerned that Ciattarelli might somehow win. Since professional grifter and conman Trump was able to win twice, I have lost faith in the intelligence, decency and common sense of my fellow Americans. Yesterday was a relief that all is not lost, and that people are waking up to Trump and the Project 2025 gang's dystopic policies and overreach of power.

I know that Philly is the media market for South Jersey and all the reporting on the polls were indicating that it was a "close race", and in some cases, almost statistically tied! And the result was that she beat him by like 13%.

They said that the race had tightened, but they weren't claiming that it was so close. I think that people are furious and came out to vote against Republicans, even if it was for minor posts, like the two seats for utility board commissioners in GA. I hope that people nationwide are just as angry next November.

and also saw this - Democrats flip 5 N.J. counties back to blue, cementing Sherrill’s sweep for governor

We have an "elder" former anchor who had worked for every network here over the past 50+ years - Larry Kane (and who had briefly worked as an anchor on WABC-TV in NY) who does "special contributor" stories here on our local news radio station KYW (sister station to 1010 WINS in NY) and he had been commenting about how "close" the race was going to be over the past month or so, including on election day. Well...
