Soros cuts $10M check for California redistricting campaign

Source: Politico

09/19/2025 11:33 AM EDT

Progressive megadonor George Soros has given $10 million to boost Gov. Gavin Newsom’s redistricting campaign as Democrats continue to raise huge sums from reliable allies.

The donation from Soros, first reported by the New York Times, is the single largest for Proposition 50 to date.

Labor unions, a national Democratic PAC, and wealthy liberals have together contributed well more than $30 million as Newsom and allies rush to persuade voters to approve new House maps that could force out a half-dozen Republicans while shoring up Democratic incumbents.

Soros is a longstanding benefactor for the left and bogeyman for the right.

5. A tiny amount compared to the quarter of a billion Musk gave to the Trump campaign.

But, in any event, even Soros should have not been able to contribute that money. None of those billionaires should have the ability to influence any election with their immense wealth.
They shouldn't have the right, or ability, to give any more than you or I to any election.

Citizens United may be the worst decision ever handed down by any Supreme Court ever.

6. ANY amount for Democrats like Newsom means that Newsom and democracy do have rich benefactors.

Add to Soros' $10 million the other $30 million from Labor unions, a national Democratic PAC, and wealthy liberals, and we've got a shot to beat the Proj 2025 oligarchs who are tearing down good and just government.

Right now taking an anti-billionaire stand won't help us win our democracy back.
Throwing out the billionaire baby with the Musk/Ellison bath water is irrational.

Righteousness alone will not keep democracy alive.
Soros and Newsom are part of the solution, not part of the problem.
THIS is the system we've been handed.
I, for one, welcome any billionaires in that system who sustain all pro-democracy fights.
Soros is billionaire for Good.

And I look forward to voting for one of IL's billionaires, Governor JB Pritzker.

12. He donates locally in Texas.

Soros provided a significant portion of the Texas Majority PAC's funding in the 2024 election cycle, contributing about two-thirds of the more than $9 million the PAC spent. Most of the money went to county Democratic parties and local voter turnout efforts.

"Blue Texas" initiative: In June 2025, the Texas Majority PAC and the Texas Democratic Party announced an eight-figure "Blue Texas" campaign backed by Soros. The initiative aims to build long-term Democratic infrastructure and turn Texas into a battleground state ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

He even donated $50,000 to Hidalgo County Democratic Party, which is actually a huge amount for a county party.

He's also a large contributor to Texas Organizing Project.
