RFK Jr. announces move to decertify organ procurement organization
Source: CBS News
Washington Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Thursday new action to reform the nation's organ transplant system, as well as a a move to decertify an organ procurement organization.
"Every American should feel safe becoming an organ donor and giving the gift of life, yet decades of ignored patient safety concerns have driven more and more Americans off the donor list," Kennedy said. "Today, under President Trump's leadership, we are taking bold action and historic action to restore trust in the organ procurement process."
Transplant experts said last year there had been a spike in people revoking organ donor registrations, after a report that a Kentucky man who'd been declared dead woke up just as a team was preparing to remove his organs. Since then, there have been more reports of attempts to remove organs from patients who had mistakenly been declared dead.
Kennedy said at a news conference that "we are acting because of years of documented patient safety data failures and repeated violations of federal requirements, and we intend this decision to serve as a clear warning."

(12,723 posts)The Arkansas Legislature passed a bill in the last session to allow a donor's family to supersede an organ donor's election.
I don't understand the issue other than a mistrust of science.

(37,710 posts)If family has the right to override the wishes of the decedent, it adds time while the medical staff figures out who to ask . . . On top of the issue of bodily autonomy. If I choose to save up to a eight individuals, and help up to 75, my family should not have the right to toss my body in the ground to rot - and to condemn those I might have saved to death.
I have had a cadaver skin graft. My daughter will likely need a liver transplant. I have dozens of friends who have had up to 5 liver transplants (due to an autoimmune disorder), and a half dozen who have died on the waiting list.
Both the Arkansas Bill, and the prospect of RFK Jr messing with organ procurement is a disaster, and will result in more deaths. The only good I can see coming from RFK Jrs involvement is the potential for some liberals who are hesitant to donate out of fear that their organs might go to a magat might think twice if RFK Jr is discouraging it.

It also just infuriates me that family can override a person's intent to be an organ donor.

I had to re-affirm that recently when I went to the DMV for my license renewal and for the first time ever, I hesitated. Now I know why.

I would rather not donate if there is the slightest chance a billionaire could benefit from my death.
