Disneys ABC said it would take Jimmy Kimmels popular late-night show off its schedule indefinitely after one of the biggest owners of TV stations in the U.S., Nexstar Media, said it intended to pre-empt airings of the program following remarks the host made about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Nexstar said Wednesday that its owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the foreseeable future, beginning with tonights show. The company said it strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.
n his monologue Monday night , Kimmel said that the MAGA gang was trying to score political points off Kirks murder. Kirk, a prominent conservative activist, was shot and killed Sept. 10 at a debate at Utah Valley University. Three days later, authorities announced they had arrested the suspected shooter.
We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them, Kimmel said. He also poked fun at President Trumps response to a question from the press about how he was mourning Kirks death after Trump pivoted to a discussion of the construction of a new White House ballroom. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened earlier on Thursday to take action against ABC.

(88 posts)Simon Schama, in Citizens (page181), describes the role of placards, songs, and cartoons parodying and ridiculing Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette in the years leading up to the Revolution. These were a source of information for the people of France about the corruption of the monarchy and laid the groundwork of popular sentiment leading to the Revolution.
Schama notes, to supply some important context of the alertness of the citizenry in pre-Revolutionary, The literacy rates in the late eighteenth-century France were much higher than in the late twentieth century United States. Much of American society is perhaps too dumbed-down at this point to understand, resist, or perhaps even give a shit about what is happening in this country.

(1,973 posts)I was a little confused about what to do at the page where it leads. There didn't seem to be an obvious, "contact us" or "email us here" option on the screen.
What I decided to do was follow through on using all the drop-down options by making selections about another show on ABC.
This is what I sent:
"Just sort of stumbled on "High Potential" last season. Kaitlin Olson is great. Was very pleased with the season premier. Wow, what a cliffhanger! . . . Unfortunately, I will never find out what happens because of ABC's cowardly and hypocritical decision to "suspend" Jimmy Kimmel. Kaitlin Olson is great, but fascism is bad. I stand with Jimmy Kimmel."
Seriously, I was really looking forward to tuning in next Tuesday for the follow-up episode of "High Potential". But I'm not going to watch it, which shows how much I've matured since I was a kid and I used to beg my brother to let me tune into "Star Trek" reruns on the grainy signals we would get from the TV stations broadcast from the next market over from our hometown.
I also plan to stop watching "Ghosts" on CBS, which is my current light-hearted comfort show. I'm allowing myself to indulge the next season, but when Colbert goes, I go.

The issue here is Nexstar, a media company that owns a lot of ABC affiliates. They are pre-empting airing Kimmel so ABC folded too. Nexstar has a questionable history but they keep getting bigger and more powerful. In the Harrisburg area they allowed an alleged sexual harasser to be in charge. Women ended up leaving the station.

However Leland Vittert that follows him to me seems to be auditioning for Fox News (not surprising considering he is ex Fox News) every night and the content reflects that. Ashley Banfield is the one show I have zero problems with as it's not about politics at all (a true crime show).
But yeah Nexstar appears to me to be a right wing organisation. Not as bad as Sinclair.
Wiz Imp
(7,278 posts)Just because they repeat it a million times a day, doesn't make it remotely close to being true. NewsNation employs Bill O'Reilly. Enough said. The only good thing to say about them is their ratings are almost nonexistent. Practically NOBODY watches them.
As for Nexstar, it's true (at least at this point) that they're not as bad as Sinclair because they don't force the local stations to air their self produced right wing propaganda. But after this, that may be coming soon.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr threatened to yank ABC affiliates' station licenses if they continued to air Kimmel, so the ABC affiliates owned by NexStar took Kimmel off the air. Nexstar owns Americas largest local television broadcasting group comprised of top network affiliates, with more than 200 owned or partner stations in 116 U.S. markets reaching 220 million people. https://www.nexstar.tv/nexstar-abc-affiliates-to-preempt-jimmy-kimmel-live-indefinitely-beginning-tonight/ NexStar needs FCC approval for their upcoming $6.2 Billion merger with Tegna. https://www.newsweek.com/jimmy-kimmel-show-cancelled-charlie-kirk-2131747
It's CBS and Paramount all over again.
Wiz Imp
(7,278 posts)Nexstar only owns 23 ABC stations. ABC has no reason to care about whether Nexatar's merger is approved or not. 90% of their stations are not impacted by anything Nexstar does. The FCC may try to pull broadcast licenses but they will not succeed because they have no legitimate cause to. Trump would lose in court.
This is nothing like the Paramount situation who wanted a merger approved. ABC is not trying to merge with anyone. This is strictly personal because Kimmel has so successfully made fun of Trump.

Wiz Imp
(7,278 posts)From 5 different sources so I don't know which number if any of them is accurate. But let's say 33 is correct. ABC has 250 stations. That means Nexstar owns at most 13% of ABC stations. So no, 33 or 13% isn't anywhere close to being significant.
SunSeeker
(56,734 posts)ABC yanked Kimmel after the Nexstar affiliates said they would no longer air him.
Wiz Imp
(7,278 posts)And they didn't want a rush to judgement from a truly significant number of affiliates to pull the show before ABC or Kimmel himself even had a chance to address the situation. It had nothing to do with Nexstar's merger. ABC has no stake in that. The people who were trying to tie it to that were just dead wrong.

Brendan Carr emphasized that ABC and its affiliates must meet obligations tied to their licenses. They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with it an obligation to operate in the public interest, he said.

I'd dare to say he's made several hundred jokes over the past year that could be construed as offensive but they use THIS? as the pretext to try to get rid of him?
FCC Chair Brendan Carr told conservative podcaster Benny Johnson that Kimmels comments were truly sick, and that there was a strong case for action against ABC and Disney. NO, Brendan Carr is truly sick for even going on a Podcast by Benny Johnson who was proven to be on Vladimir Putin's payroll.
The FCC does not even license networks so they can't pull their license. They do license the individual affiliates but the FCC needs specific reasons to revoke a license.
Reasons a station can lose their license
-A station can lose their license due to serious financial corruption by the stations owner: tax evasion, fraudulent business practices, and so forth. Bankruptcy can also see a station go off the air, and thus give up their license.
-Failing to broadcast an adequate signal, adhere to FCC technical requirements, or other technical issues (such as causing interference, etc.) can also see the FCC step in.
-Failure to renew their license
-The FCC requires radio and television station licensees to serve the public interest in some way; failure to do so can result in a station losing its license. However, this is extremely rare, as it requires something particularly egregious and ongoing on the stations part.
There is nothing in there about being able to remove a license because they don't kiss "dear leader's" ass.
This is blatantly unconstitutional and I'm sure lawsuits may be fired before tonight is even over. Very, very chilling.

There never would have been corporations owning dozens or even hundreds of stations and being able to control programming for political beliefs or favors. And that's how this started. A Trump-friend, owner of lots of TV stations who wants a mega-merger approval basically stroked Trump by dumping Kimmel. We've already seen how gutless ABS/Disney is so they folded too.
Never could have happened back when there were national and market ownership limits.
Clinton signed this garbage but the bill passed both houses overwhelmingly. Thirty years later, there is far less competition and independent ownership.

There needs to be some serious backlash/boycotting for ABC and reporting from other outlets of what was actually said. Removing content you don't like is about as un-American as you can get and using the Kirk shooting in this way is nstituting fascim 101.
Would love to see HBO or somebody put together a hard hitting show like the old Jon Stewart Daily Show, featuring Colbert and Kimmel. Unfortunately, HBO might end up caving to pressure on something like that also.

(2,222 posts)Hello!? I cancelled Hulu and sent that nasty form letter to ABC.
I did request they brush up on their history. Especially Neville Chamberlain.
Do not bend for a fascist dictator. Especially a fat, no class, can't dress proper, stinky con man extorting the world.
