House GOP eyes lawmaker security boost in bill to avert shutdown

House GOP leaders are close to finalizing a government funding extension that would avert a shutdown through Nov. 20 and potentially include more money for lawmaker security in the wake of the Charlie Kirk killing.

Republican leaders want to put the bill on the House floor this week, as a Sept. 30 shutdown deadline looms. POLITICO previously reported the bill would likely extend funding through Nov. 20, the week before Thanksgiving. The member security funding is of huge importance to many on Capitol Hill amid heightened threats on lawmakers. It’s the final item to sort out, according to three people granted anonymity to discuss the private negotiations.

Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday on Fox News that all options were on the table for lawmaker security efforts. He has pledged to speed up a review of an expiring pilot program to provide individual lawmakers with more safety resources.

Republicans are preparing to push through the measure amid protests from Democrats. Democratic leaders have signaled they will oppose a funding punt that doesn’t include health care policy items like extending enhanced Affordable Care Act tax credits.

They will each get their own private security details that will be paid for by us, the taxpayers.

But what are the rest of us Americans to do?

I reckon if we are not buddies with the President then we just have to dodge and weave.

Now if folks could just get health insurance so when we get shot we don't have to declare bankruptcy.

You can’t legally spend money for Congressional security once the end of the fiscal year has passed.

If the government shuts down, that needs to include every armed officer guarding all of our Comgressmbers, Justices/ judges, or other senior government officials. Period.

If we’re broke, you all are on your own. I’m good with that.

solution to all politicians security problem . If they would come together with the other side and come to agreement on things that helps everybody instead of doing for the money donors and the rich they would be welcome everywhere rather than being hated . If they would stop letting disparaging remarks about the other side be their every word at the first sight of a microphone we would all be safer along with them .When never hear solutions about anything coming before lawmakers other than but but but the other side this or that. I'm sick of the political bs .If the podcasters were run out of the business of grabbing every bad word from a political figure about the opposite side and compounding it what a world we would have.
