Noem says roundup of Koreans at Hyundai plant in Georgia won't deter investment in the US

LONDON (AP) U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said Monday she doesnt think the detention of hundreds of South Koreans in an immigration raid at a Hyundai plant in Georgia will deter investment in the United States because such tough actions mean there is no uncertainty about the Trump administrations policies.
The detention of 475 workers, more than 300 of them South Korean, in the Sept. 4 raid has caused confusion, shock and a sense of betrayal among many in the U.S.-allied nation.
This is a great opportunity for us to make sure that all companies are reassured that when you come to the United States, youll know what the rules of the game are, Noem said at a meeting in London of ministers from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing partnership focused on border security.
Were encouraging all companies who want to come to the United States and help our economy and employ people, that we encourage them to employ U.S. citizens and to bring people to our country that want to follow our laws and work here the right way, she told reporters. The detained Koreans would be deported after most were detained for ignoring removal orders, while a few had engaged in other criminal activity and will face the consequences, Noem said.

The U.S. country is being run by a bunch of psychopaths like that guy Ryan Routh, who goes on trial this week, who stalked 45 at Mar-a-Lago.
Some of them start out "play-acting", but they have done it for so long that it becomes a part of their actual being.
South Korea has now discovered what happens when the FAFO.

I have a degree in Ragiography and one in Radiation Therapy from the early 80s, so 40+ years ago. Roentgen was the unit I used in measuring patient exposure. I had the formulas programmed into my first TI graphing calculators. Doing the.measurements long hand with a pencil was a bitch.
I know, intellectually, the units of measurements are now Sieverts & Gray.
It was nice to see the term today

(35,985 posts)From google AI -The HBO miniseries Chernobyl extensively uses the roentgen (R) as a unit of radiation measurement, particularly highlighting the infamous 3.6 roentgens reading from the low-quality dosimeters, to demonstrate the initial underestimation of the danger. The series shows how this legacy unit was the standard in the Soviet Union at the time, though the characters later use higher-range dosimeters to reveal the true, much higher radiation levels in the surrounding areas.

(414 posts)One of the most deranged in this administration, and Koreans are messaging a lot about the offence felt. And despite America pretending it isnt a factor, it is the offence from the states that set Canada's resolve. No government or political body asked Canadians to boycott tge USA. No tariffs had actually taken effect and Canadians just decided as citizens to boycott.
Noem's stunt at the Haskell Free Library was only done to offend people. And the US is paying for that stunt too. The damage this wrecking crew are doing is astounding, and will last for many decades.

(20,246 posts)Of course, what happened at the Hyundai plant with South Korean Nationals here on work Visas WILL affect International investments in the United States. International companies have their people here to train American workers to run the facilities. Having her ICE goons arresting people will make these companies think twice.

You know whats dumber than Tariffs on our allies, or the National Guard on our streets? ICE raiding a Hyundai plant in Georgia. Lets recall some ancient history. Trumps whole 2024 economic gospel was Build factories in America, bring jobs home!
Those of us who remembered Trump outsourcing his own merch manufacturing to Mexico & China tried to warn our MAGA pals. Trumps own history proved he'd never actually cared about Made in the USA, we reminded. But we were promptly called globalist Marxist groomer cucks, all of which are hard to be at the same time.
Turns out, when Trump warned of foreign invasions, he meant engineers with PhDs.
They wound up arresting nearly 500 people, including legal US citizens, legal South Korean workers, and various South Korean nationals setting up the plant who were allegedly here illegally after overstaying their visas, or whose specific work wasnt covered by their visas.

(104,743 posts)Stating the obvious, of course, but Noem's nonsense needed official pushback:
More than 300 South Koreans who were arrested in the raid have now been released from detention and are due to return home on Friday after having their release delayed by more than a day.
Their departure was delayed because of an instruction from the White House, Lee added.
President Donald Trump ordered the pause to check whether the workers were willing to remain in the US to continue working and training Americans, according to a South Korean foreign ministry official.

(5,251 posts)I can just see all the new investments coming now.
Dont get me wrong, foreign companies that invest should indeed create jobs for US-based workers. And if they want to bring in foreign workers, they should do so through legal channels and comply with all U.S. labor and employment laws. And the U.S. has a right to enforce its laws.
But how the U.S. approached this, the demeaning behavior, the violations of basic civil rights, the public embarrassment and disrespect for the foreign government and its citizensno they wont be lining up to invest here.

(56,725 posts)Jobs were to go to Americans. They came on B1 Visas but because of the ridiculous delay at immigration, they weren't able to convert them to H1B visas. One engineer had only just arrived the night before, so his status was entirely legal.
OrwellwasRight
(5,251 posts)I didnt say they were here illegally. I said Noem is entirely wrong that foreign firms will line up to invest after treatment like this.

(5,251 posts)And again, I made no statements as the immigration status of the particular people who were humiliatingly detained. I was just explaining what I believe in generally. To repeat, I think it would be great if investments in the US yield jobs for those who live here. And I also believe that companies have a right to bring workers here in compliance with our laws. These are both generic statements about what I believe. They are not and were not comments on the status of the workers at this particular worksite. My comments on that particular worksite were limited to the fact that, given the demeaning and inhumane treatment of these particular workers, firms will not be lining up to invest here. No foreign firm wants to set itself and its employees up for such treatment. So I do not know what you are arguing about. Whatever it is, it wasn't in my post. Have a good day.

(56,725 posts)And in the Korean press, it's clear that Korea is furious about the raid.
As the Koreans were being released, Trump asked them to stay. If they were criminals, why did he do that? Only 1 person did stay.
