US could seek piece of defense companies, Commerce chief says
Source: Reuters
The Trump administration is weighing possible stakes in defense companies and others it does business with, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said on Tuesday in defending President Donald Trump's push for a greater federal government role in American businesses.
"They're thinking about it," Lutnick told CNBC, citing Pentagon leaders, when asked if the administration was considering taking pieces of contractors such as Lockheed Martin Corp, Boeing Co or Palantir Technologies Inc . "There's a lot of talking that needs to be had about how do we finance our munitions acquisitions."
"There's a monstrous discussion about defense. Lockheed Martin makes 97% of their revenue from the U.S. government. They are basically an arm of the U.S. government," he added.

The Trump administration last week announced a near-10% stake in chipmaker Intel. It previously intervened to complete the purchase of U.S. Steel by Japan's Nippon Steel in June, taking what Trump called a "golden share" that gives Washington say over its operations.

(8,366 posts)If this is going to be done shouldn't we expect any earnings or dividends or proceeds from the sale of it go into a commonwealth fund and then CONGRESS with the power of the pusrse can say where it goes next?
The first priority should be making Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid solvent for 75 years.
They made the post office fund its' pension liabilities to solvency for 75 years back in 2008, if that hasn't been stolen in some manner already.

(6,523 posts)wants to create a sovereign wealth fund from the monies. They didn't say what that fund would be spent on, or why it is necessary now and not the 250+ years prior to this. The one thing that's changed is trump has been involved with all these dictatorships and Arab countries that tout these "sovereign wealth funds" and he thinks he needs one. NOT that the country needs it... HE needs it. And I'd lay odds if he creates one for America, the money will be going directly into his pocket, one way or another. Just another way to steal from us.
