(169,246 posts)As a political matter, Donald Trump and his team have made this a difficult year for the Smithsonian. Its poised to get much worse.
If Republicans want Trumpâs critics to stop calling him an authoritarian, maybe White House officials shouldnât tell the Smithsonian that theyâll be reviewing exhibits to ensure the presidentâs views are reflected. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

But just because things are bad doesnt mean they cant get worse. The Wall Street Journal reported:
The White House plans to conduct a far-reaching review of Smithsonian museum exhibitions, materials and operations ahead of Americas 250th anniversary to ensure the museums align with President Trumps interpretation of American history. In a letter sent to Lonnie Bunch, the secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, three top White House officials said they want to ensure the museums unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story and reflect the presidents executive order calling for Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History.
The Journals report, which has been independently verified by NBC News, added that Team Trump intends to scrutinize everything from public-facing exhibition text and online content to internal curatorial processes, exhibition planning, the use of collections and artist grants......
Of course, theres no reason to believe that Americans have lost confidence in the Smithsonian, just as theres no reason to believe the public will feel greater confidence in the museums after Team Trump advances its wildly unnecessary initiative. (The letter was signed by White House senior associate Lindsey Halligan, the director of the domestic policy council, Vince Haley, and the director of the office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought.)....
The title of the White Houses order from March said the directive was intended to restore sanity to American history. Given the circumstances, sanity is not the word that comes to mind.

Weirdly this doesn't mention that the woman Trump put in charge of reviewing the Smithsonian is his Florida criminal defense attorney who didn't like some of the museum's exhibits when she visited after the inauguration so she convinced Trump to sign an executive order putting her in charge
The letter, dated Tuesday, Aug. 12, and viewed by The Wall Street Journal, was signed by White House senior associate Lindsey Halligan, the director of the domestic policy council, Vince Haley, and the director of the office of Management and Budget, Russ Vought. "This is about preserving trust in one of our most cherished institutions," Halligan said in a statement. "The Smithsonian museums and exhibits should be accurate, patriotic, and enlightening- ensuring they remain places of learning, wonder, and national pride for generations to come." The White House review of the Smithsonian's massive collection of art and historical artifacts comes as the president has sought to reform the country's cultural institutions, including top universities, and demonstrates Trump's efforts to recast
parts of American history in a more positive light.

(169,246 posts)This "fact sheet" is very upsetting and sad
https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/03/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-restores-truth-and-sanity-to-american-history/
Here are some of the provisions of this "fact sheet"
The Order directs the Administration to work with Congress to ensure that future Smithsonian appropriations: (1) prohibit funding for exhibits or programs that degrade shared American values, divide Americans by race, or promote ideologies inconsistent with Federal law; and (2) celebrate womens achievements in the American Womens History Museum and do not recognize men as women.
The Vice President will work with congressional leaders to appoint members to the Smithsonian Board of Regents who are committed to advancing the celebration of Americas extraordinary heritage and progress.
trump had to insult the Biden administration in this "fact sheet"
The prior administration pushed a divisive ideology that reconstrued Americas promotion of liberty as fundamentally flawed, infecting revered institutions like the Smithsonian and national parks with false narratives.
trump never studied history and trump's proposed revisions to history are really disgusting

(77,562 posts)White House launching review of Smithsonian museums to "ensure alignment" with Trump's plans

The White House is launching an internal review of some of the Smithsonian Institution's best-known museums, seeking to "celebrate American exceptionalism" and remove what it views as "divisive or ideologically driven language."
The review was announced in a letter Tuesday to Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution Lonnie Bunch, signed by Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought and two other White House aides. It comes after President Trump signed an executive order in March pushing for changes at the Smithsonian, including the removal of "improper ideology."
The review is timed with next year's celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the letter said.
"This initiative aims to ensure alignment with the President's directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions," the White House's letter read.
The administration's review will initially focus on eight museums, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture which was highlighted in Mr. Trump's executive order for allegedly featuring "divisive, race-centered ideology" as well as the Air and Space Museum, the Museum of American History and the National Portrait Gallery, among others. Additionalf museums will be reviewed in a future phase......................................

The Honorable Lonnie G. Bunch III
Secretary, Smithsonian Institution
1000 Jefferson Dr SW
Washington, DC 20560
Subject: Internal Review of Smithsonian Exhibitions and Materials
Dear Secretary Bunch,
We wish to begin by expressing our appreciation for the brief tour you gave us recently of the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and by acknowledging your work on behalf of the Smithsonian Institution, as well as the Institutions role in shaping public understanding of American history and culture. We are completely aligned with your statement that the Smithsonian is a welcoming place of knowledge and discovery for all Americans. We are grateful that you and the Board of Regents have expressed your commitment to the non-partisan, educational mission of this great institution.
As we prepare to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our Nations founding, it is more important than ever that our national museums reflect the unity, progress, and enduring values that define the American story. In this spirit, and in accordance with Executive Order 14253, Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History, we will be leading a comprehensive internal review of selected Smithsonian museums and exhibitions. This initiative aims to ensure alignment with the Presidents directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions.
This review is a constructive and collaborative effort one rooted in respect for the Smithsonians vital mission and its extraordinary contributions. Our goal is not to interfere with the day-to-day operations of curators or staff, but rather to support a broader vision of excellence that highlights historically accurate, uplifting, and inclusive portrayals of Americas heritage.
The review will focus on several key areas:
