President Donald Trumps nominee to head the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggested getting rid of the agencys closely watched monthly jobs estimate after the most recent estimate angered the president.
Until it is corrected, the BLS should suspend issuing the monthly job reports but keep publishing the more accurate, though less timely, quarterly data, Antoni said.
The fact that you consistently have large downward revisions means that there are other things wrong with your models and methodologies. Statistical assumptions that may have worked fine before COVID no longer work in todays economy and therefore need to be revised, he said.
The monthly job reports always include revisions to prior months data as more survey responses come in. Revisions can be both positive or negative, but have been negative each month of 2025. Economists say revisions can become larger in times of economic change, such as before a recession, which some have warned could happen as a result of Trumps tariff policy.

It's Trumps M.O., just like with covid, "Stop testing!"

Too bad there's no such thing as ADP.
Too bad no one can tell what's going on with the employment rate just by looking around them.
Too bad there are no other economic indicators to tell us what's up.
The G in maga definitely don't stand for genius.

(7,388 posts)that he expected they would just stop publishing the data. It's been clear to those of us that worked on these programs that the BLS staff will never manipulate the numbers. If they put out fake numbers not developed by the actual statisticians who work on the programs, it will be obvious and whistleblowers will call them on it. So stopping publication of the data always kind of made sense as the move the would make.
Make no mistake, this would be a very bad thing, and effectively an admission that they know the data will look bad for Trump, but it would be infinitely better than trying to put out fake numbers.
