Michigan Gov. Whitmer Makes Another White House Visit to Meet With Trump

WASHINGTON (AP) — Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday to discuss the toll tariffs are taking on the auto industry and the potential effects of his tax and spending bill on Medicaid.

It's the latest in a string of meetings between the Democratic governor and the Republican president after the two frequently clashed during his first term. In his second term, Whitmer has adopted a more diplomatic approach, drawing some backlash from fellow Democrats. But it's also resulted in multiple wins for Whitmer's state, including Trump's approving $50 million in storm relief and awarding a new fighter jet mission for an Air National Guard base in the state.

“I’ve always said that I’ll work with anyone to get things done for Michigan,” Whitmer, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, said in a statement Tuesday. “That’s why I’ve continued to go to Washington, D.C., to make sure that Michiganders are front and center when critical decisions are being made.”

The private meeting between Trump and Whitmer — her third trip to the White House this year, in addition to a dinner in February where she sat next to Trump — marks a rare cordial relationship between the president and a leading Democratic figure. A White House official would not confirm the meeting but did stress Trump's continued focus on Michigan.

I think she’s caving to Trump. She gives him the opportunity to have it appear as if he’s manipulating her. She needs to keep her distance.

Michigan has a Democratic triplex and a divided trifecta. The Democratic Party controls the offices of governor, secretary of state, and attorney general. The Democratic Party controls the upper chamber, while the Republican Party controls the lower chamber of the state legislature. Both Senators are Democratic. US House Representation is 7 Rs, 6Ds. I mean, all in, hardly a precarious state for Democrats. Whitmer doesn't exactly have to govern hard to the center.

However, Michigan went Trump in 2016 and 2024. If she has to get things done for her constituents and its done on the down low, I guess she'll do it.

I don't know how she has the stomach to work with those Nazis though.

So, she's Murkowski. As long as my people are protected, I will support fascism and screwing the other 49 states.

Has she forgotten that she was the target of a kidnapping plot by a couple of Trump MAGAs? Keep her off any Dem ticket in 2028. She may have fallen under Donald's 'spell' like Bill Maher and other Dem fools who have been wined and dined by the Pedophile.

8. It makes sense to try. The MI auto companies are hit by tariffs on Canada and Mexico,

and the Detroit border with Canada sees a massive amount of freight moving between the two companies, which may also be affected by large tariffs.

It's just a visit, she's not going to work for his administration or for Fox News. She's just doing "governor" stuff.

I don't think she's visiting Trump as a way to kick off her 2028 presidential campaign.

11. Good! I'm glad she's making an effort to educate and let him (and others) know what the impact is.

I'm sure there will be plenty online who will rip her to shreds for "shaking his hand" or "being polite" and for not "bashing his nose with a hard punch" ... but that's not how things work. She's reasonable and honorable and trying to accomplish something positive... in spite of what the hater will say about her.
