Democratic Sen. Schiff again asks White House officials to disclose financial transactions

Source: ABC News

June 2, 2025, 4:28 PM

Democratic Sen. Adam Schiff in a letter to White House chief of staff Susie Wiles sent Monday, repeated his calls for the White House to issue a full disclosure of financial transactions from senior officials.

The new ask comes after the California senator -- along with 25 other Democratic members of Congress -- sent a separate letter to Wiles in April that outlined his concern surrounding potential ethics violations, asking for a commitment from all senior White House and executive branch employees to "expeditiously" transmit all reports related to their securities transactions since the start of Trump's term to the Office of Government Ethics, and that the reports be made public.

That April letter was sent in the wake of President Donald Trump's sudden pause that month of his sweeping set of tariffs, which triggered widespread concern from Schiff and other Democrats that those close to the president might have engaged in insider trading as markets rose following the pause.

In his Monday letter, addressed to Wiles like the first but also including White House Counsel David Warrington, Schiff notes that senior executive White House officials are “now beyond the maximum allowable filing period for individuals who began their service at the outset of the Administration” under federal ethics laws, which mandate that they file public annual financial disclosure documents, including a new entrant report, within 30 days of assuming their duties.

3. The vast majority of Congressional "letters" are requests to provide written responses to questions

Schiff's letter includes this (from here -https://www.schiff.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/Sen-Schiff-Letter-to-WH-on-New-Entrant-Reports.pdf) -

(snip)

This Administration’s prolonged and unexplained failure to comply with well-established statutory
obligations raises grave questions. While the President purports to demand “radical transparency” from
the federal government, his top advisors refuse to assure the American people that they are not profiting
from their positions or concealing serious conflicts of interest.6 Additionally, it remains unclear whether
any disciplinary action, including assessment of late filing fees, has been initiated for those who have
failed to produce the required disclosures.

Therefore, I request the following information no later than June 10, 2025:

1. a list of all White House officials required to file new entrant reports;
2. an explanation for the failure to transmit any new entrant reports to OGE for second-level review
and certification;
3. the current status and anticipated timeline for the submission and public posting of all overdue
disclosures;
4. a list of any filing extensions requested and granted by designated White House ethics officials
and the duration of those extensions; and
5. whether any late filing fees have been imposed for delinquent filings, as required by law.

Transparency and compliance with ethics laws are essential. The American public deserves to know that
those serving at the highest levels of government are free from financial conflicts of interest and have
complied with the laws designed to safeguard the integrity of public service. I look forward to reviewing
your responses.

I know DU thinks Democrats only do "strongly worded letters" as simple finger-wagging scolding, but that is NOT what they, as members of Congress, do with these written requests. The responses are used as part of hearings and to help draft new legislation.

And legislation republicans can ignore? Amazing. We are losing this war, and its because our side doesnt understand what is happening to them, and strongly written letters do not work. This does not work.

I am starting to wonder what the age range is on the people who are supporting the democrats sending letters for everything is? I mean I am 40, a registered nurse, and I am very close to dropping the D from my name and finding a group of people who will actually do something. Ban me, shame me, i dont care anymore. Sit on your hands, use them to write letters. Same thing to me. Peace.

the info doesn't just go "poof" because the GOP is power. It IS stored for future use in future legislation for when we can control the Committee Chairs.

The info that was gathered under President Bill Clinton (with Hillary Clinton's efforts) for a health care law in the early '90s, eventually RESURFACED a decade later to be used as a "lessons learned" on how to handle the drafting of what became the ACA under Obama in the mid-2000s.

As a former fed, I guarantee you that during my 30+ years, when a member of Congress "sent a letter requesting info", the fire was lit, and upper management sent out "All Employees" memos (before computers, done by FAX, with the secretaries making photocopies to shove in everyone's mailbox), requesting us to RESPOND TO THE REQUESTS.

That meant, STOP THE FUCK WHAT YOU WERE DOING AND SEARCH THROUGH YOUR DOCUMENTS FOR ANYTHING THAT MIGHT APPLY AND WAS REPONSIVE. Then make copies and give to your supervisor so they can compile the docs, forward up the chain, and where eventually BOXES of printouts (and later floppy discs/DVDs with files burned on them), WERE SENT TO THE MEMBER OF CONGRESS WHO REQUESTED IT.

Sorry to shout but we have a problem here where people here have complete lack of Civics 101 and how Congress works. This idiocy about "Congress sending letters" is exactly the type of ignorance that needs to be rectified.
