ICE chief defends agents' use of masks, decries sanctuary jurisdictions

BOSTON -- The head of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Monday defended his tactics against criticism that authorities are being too heavy-handed as they ramp up arrests toward President Donald Trump's promises of mass deportations. San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria said he was “deeply upset” by an ICE operation at a popular Italian restaurant just before the dinner rush on Friday. A chaotic showdown unfolded outside as customers and witnesses shouted, smoke bombs filled the air, and agents wore heavy tactical gear to face an angry crowd.

Todd Lyons, ICE's acting director, turned emotional when asked to explain why officials wear masks. He said some have received death threats and been harassed online. “I’m sorry if people are offended by them wearing masks, but I’m not going to let my officers and agents go out there and put their lives on the line, their family on the line because people don’t like what immigration enforcement is,” he said at a news conference in Boston to announce nearly 1,500 arrests in the region as part of a month-long “surge operation.”

Lyons was leaving the room when a reporter asked him about the masks. He returned to the podium. “Is that the issue here that we’re just upset about the masks?” he asked. “Or is anyone upset about the fact that ICE officers’ families were labeled terrorists?” Lyons may have been referring to comments by San Diego Councilman Sean Elo-Rivera, who called ICE officers “terrorists” after Friday's restaurant raid. “This isn't safety. It's state-sponsored terrorism," Elo-Rivera wrote on Instagram.

The Department of Homeland Security reposted Elo-Rivera's message, saying that likening ICE to terrorists was “sickening.” The councilman stuck by his comments on Monday. Other elected officials, such as Gloria and U.S. Rep. Scott Peters of San Diego, both Democrats, were more muted but also sharply critical of ICE and the Republican White House. “Federal actions like these are billed as a public safety measure, but it had the complete opposite effect. What we saw undermines trust and creates fear in our community,” Gloria said.

enforce the law and you do it by wearing plain clothes and masks with no ID you are a terrorist. Sorry about your family's pain but the pain you are causing families and children will be the effects. There are other legal and humanitarian way to do your job.

arresting citizens and lying to them about their legitimate Real IDs, arresting children without their parents knowing, smashing into homes, and in general, putting fear in the hearts of even ordinary citizens. My wife was afraid when we returned two months ago from Europe because your TERRORISTS act like terrorists, not law enforcement.

Todd, clean up your act and Americans will not be calling you Nazis, Gestapo, Storm Troopers, terrorists or other negative words. Those words came AFTER your people acted that way!

The Defense of Police Act was introduced by Senator Joe Keene following the tragic events of White Night in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Following the ratification of DOPA, a pilot program was initiated in Tulsa. The legislation led to an 80% drop in crime in the city and was considered such a success that other cities including Atlanta, New Orleans, and Denver wanted to initiate a masked police program of their own.[1]

The law requires police to wear masks to conceal their identities from criminals and the public.

That masks poisoned you by carbon dioxide. Why aren’t all of the secret police guys dropping dead?

Maybe they could at least wear SS pins on their collars.

Am seeing the recoil of them trying to defend their gestapo tactics and the pressure needs to continue.

No, you are just putting me and mine on the line.

If someone tries to enter my house or mess with me in public and they will not properly identify themselves... what transpires after that is on them.

(No, a nice, flashy costume and a real cool looking badge does not constitute 'identifying features'. I worked as an entertainer for over four decades. I am well aware of how realistic some recreations can look. It does not impress me. Real identification is what is required.)

ESPECIALLY since there have been numerous reports of "fake" ICE agents with scammers dressing up "in costume" and showing up at homes, businesses, and schools, as well as accosting people on the street claiming to be "from ICE", and who were not.

Multiple ICE impersonation arrests made during nationwide immigration crackdown

I am wondering when we will see a report on their efforts to find the imposters and arrest them.

Any day now...

we would also need to retake the Senate AND have the Presidency.

For a bill to become a law, it needs approval by BOTH the House and Senate and to be signed by the President (although in the latter case, if it's not the end of a calendar year and the President doesn't sign, it automatically goes into effect). So we know that with respect to the loon GOP's biggest "show talking point", 45 would veto anything that even attempts this.
