AOC Warns GOP Over Trump Bill: 'When This Country Wakes Up ... There Will Be Consequences'

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) issued a fiery rebuke on the House floor on Wednesday night as she slammed GOP attempts to push through President Donald Trumps so-called Big Beautiful Bill that she warned will strip health care coverage from 13.7 million Americans.
Republicans are going to try to tell you every distraction in the book from that essential number, she warned during an at-times heated debate, saying the legislation had only been put together in a matter of hours on the back of a napkin.
For my Republican colleagues who are sure what is in and not in this bill, in this process that has been this rushed, when you wake up this morning, you will realize that you voted to defund Planned Parenthood and to take away health care from 13.7 million Americans, she said.
The Democratic lawmaker ― one of many to slam the bill during a House debate ― also warned of how the result will play out in the real world. When this country wakes up in the morning, there will be consequences to pay for this, she said.

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which manages Lake Lanier, tells Channel 2 Action News that it is planning to close more than 20 lakeside parks due to government budget cuts. I hate to hear that theyre closing them. Sorry to hear that, said boater John Howkins.
Lake Lanier has 76 recreational areas. The US Army Corps of Engineers operates 37 parks and campgrounds, 10 marinas, and Lake Lanier Islands. It leases out 40 parks and campgrounds to local governments and other organizations.
It isnt yet known if the parks slated for closure are Corps-operated or leased, and if there is a timeline for closings.
We really like coming to Lake Lanier. We love exploring the parks and hanging out. Its a beautiful area. The closing of parks really does bother me, because a lot of people enjoy these parks. They really like coming out here. Its a great place for kids to come out and play, too, said visitor Billy Brown.

She said many of these areas are along the lake that is partly located in 45-land and the people there ain't gonna like this!

(152,880 posts)You see that in the interviews with them. They don't care about "economics" - they demand that we "wait and give him some time" and other nonsense. But they are just ecstatic about people being terrorized, rounded up, and shipped out.

(17,415 posts)They see others around them prospering, but not them -- perhaps because of a lack of skills, education, opportunities, or some combination of these elements.
So they blame their situation on those others, believing that their prosperity is based on receiving perceived government grants and benefits they are denied because they are not of a preferred ethnicity or class.
This only contributes to their grievances, which are amplified by Fox News, conservative media, and from the pulpit. Thus they are prone to support eliminating government programs that provide relief, because that will bring the others down to their level of poverty.
IMO ignorance, racism, and jealousy are the root causes of their disfunction and their "own the libs" mentality.

(16,670 posts)During the 2008 presidential campaign, John McCain gave a campaign-speech and tried to present his vision of making healthcare affordable. He invented a hypothetical to make his point: A young, single man, who has no health-insurance and who suddenly gets very sick.
When the republican crowd heard that we have to pool our ressources together and together carry the financial burden of healthcare (as insurances do), the crowd erupted in shouts of: "LET HIM DIE!"
Unless it hits them personally, MAGAs absolutely DO NOT CARE. The world could go to hell and they 100% wouldn't mind as long as they got their's.

(10,632 posts)This is never going to happen. I'm genuinely starting to worry the fight might be over.
This belief that Americans are fighters or warriors for democracy or manifest destiny is a lie. That has never been the case. By in large we owe our democracy, our freedoms, our Constitution, to a very small percentage of the US population. Everyone else, especially in the last 100 years, has largely escaped any real hard choices. Especially white people that have lived a life of privilege as they actively undermined and oppressed people of color, women and the LGBTQ+

Well see if and when the frogs in the pot ever realize their predicament.

(12,607 posts)A bunch of comments say people will never wake up, but while I think the 30-something percent MAGA faithful won't, I am hopeful we can get enough of the less extreme Trump voters. Remember, he got almost 50% of the votes even though only about a third of the country are strongly behind him. The difference between those numbers could be largely gettable.
So I hope she's right.
