(10,527 posts)It pains me that both unbelievable and unsurprsing are the new normal for this once proud nation.
This ends in disaster for the planet and too many in Europe and Asia are ignoring that fact.
The implosion of the USA into chaos and eventually total collapse is NOT a good thing for anyone, yet, they are sitting by idling twiddling their thumbs and allowing this to happen without any attempts to slow or stop it.
The lessons of the 20th century have been forgotten.
The chaos of the 19th and 20th centuries are going to be replayed with more destructive weapons and less honorable leaders.
What could possibly go wrong? (yeah, that's sarcasm...)

However, there are a few differences:
Grover Clevelands children didnt sail back and forth to arrange skeezy deals for their own profit.
The statue was not only visited by Grover Cleveland and his immediate circle of toadies.
And, most importantly -
Grover Cleveland didnt take the fricking thing home with him after he left office.

(7,853 posts)AF1 is a very nicely-appointed "office in the sky" on a mid-sized plane, but this thing is enormous, fuel-guzzling, and can't land at any but the largest airports due to size.
It will take years to clear it of bugs and retrofit it with security measures to be AF1. Possibly Don's entire term. Then he gets to keep it where it will literally just be a walkthrough attraction at his library/museum.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accepted the luxury plane in accordance with all federal rules and regulations, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement to CNBC.
The Department of Defense will work to ensure that the jet, which President Donald Trump wants to use as the new Air Force One, fulfills proper security measures and functional-mission requirements, Parnell said.

(NYT) "A deal for a state-backed Emirati firm to use a Trump-affiliated digital coin was announced in a panel that included the presidents son and his business partner, who promised, 'This is only the beginning.'"
"Sitting in front of a packed auditorium in Dubai, a founder of the Trump family cryptocurrency business made a brief but monumental announcement on Thursday. A fund backed by Abu Dhabi, he said, would be making a $2 billion business deal using the Trump firms digital coins."
"That transaction would be a major contribution by a foreign government to President Trumps private venture one that stands to generate hundreds of millions of dollars for the Trump family. And it is a public and vivid illustration of the ethical conflicts swirling around Mr. Trumps crypto firm, which has blurred the boundary between business and government."
"Zach Witkoff, a founder of the Trump family crypto firm, World Liberty Financial, revealed that a so-called stablecoin developed by the firm would be used to complete the transaction between the state-backed Emirati investment firm MGX and Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world."
"Virtually every detail of Mr. Witkoffs announcement, made during a conference panel with Mr. Trumps second-eldest son, contained a conflict of interest."

And:

'Meanwhile, the Senate is gearing up to pass the 'GENIUS' Act - stablecoin legislation that will make it easier for the President and his family to line their own pockets. This is corruption and no senator should support it.'"

The United States has accepted a 747 jetliner as a gift from the government of Qatar, and the Air Force has been asked to figure out a way to rapidly upgrade it so it can be put into use as a new Air Force One for President Trump, a Defense Department spokesman confirmed Wednesday.
The secretary of defense has accepted a Boeing 747 from Qatar in accordance with all federal rules and regulations, the chief Pentagon spokesman, Sean Parnell, said in a statement. The Department of Defense will work to ensure proper security measures and functional-mission requirements are considered for an aircraft used to transport the president of the United States.
The plane, which industry executives estimated is worth about $200 million, will require extensive work before it can be considered secure enough to carry Mr. Trump, Pentagon officials have acknowledged in recent days. Any civilian aircraft will take significant modifications to do so, Troy Meink, the Air Force secretary, said on Tuesday during Senate testimony. Based on the secretarys direction, we are postured and were off looking at that right now, what its going to take for that particular aircraft.
{snip}
The Qatari plane, flight records show, has been in San Antonio since early last month at an airplane maintenance facility. Trump administration officials have said they are considering hiring L3Harris, a military contractor, to handle the retrofit, but no formal contract has been disclosed publicly, at least so far. In a statement on Wednesday, the Air Force said it is preparing to award a contract to modify a Boeing 747 aircraft for executive airlift. Details related to the contract are classified. Congress also has not yet taken any formal vote to accept the plane as a gift from Qatar. The Constitution requires that Congress sign off on any large gift given to the president. Mr. Trump has said the gift is to the United States government, not him as president.

Eric Schmitt is a national security correspondent for The Times. He has reported on U.S. military affairs and counterterrorism for more than three decades.

(12 posts)He probably won't ever even get to fly in this plane. First, it needs some level of work. It's been sitting for years and I imagine that it needs at least minimal improvements to serve as AF1. By the time that happens, the mid terms will probably have occurred and, at the very least, the House will likely have flipped to Democratic control, and they will make it as difficult as possible for this deal to go through as Trump envisions. If both sides of the Congress flips, Trump will probably get impeached and, at the very least, he can almost certainly kiss that plane goodbye. I can even imagine it being given back to Qatar.

A week later, however, its apparently a done deal. The New York Times reported:
The United States has accepted a 747 jetliner as a gift from the government of Qatar, and the Air Force has now been asked to figure out a way to rapidly upgrade it so it can be put into use as a new Air Force One for President Trump, a Defense Department spokesman confirmed Wednesday.

The Department of Defense will work to ensure proper security measures and functional-mission requirements are considered for an aircraft used to transport the president of the United States.
The Times report added that the Defense Department has not given an estimate of when the work on the Qatari plane might be done, even though Mr. Trump and the White House have made clear the president wants it soon, perhaps even by the end of the year.....
How does Trump plan to explain away his earlier condemnations of presidents accepting foreign gifts? Why is the president apparently indifferent to the fact that even many of his Republican allies have expressed opposition to this idea?
As for the gambits many Democratic critics, the congressional minority cant hold hearings or send subpoenas, but a group of Senate Democrats last week formally requested that the Pentagons inspector generals office open an investigation into the matter, which might actually happen.
This story, in other words, is just getting started.
This action may prevent any additional third parties from adding listening and spyware devices to this plan. However, this plane has been on an unguarded runway for a couple of years and so anyone who wanted to plant spyware on this plane has had a long time to do so.
You need an appropriation to pay for the $1 billion of upgrades.
