Federal mediators were set to join negotiations between striking rail engineers and New Jersey Transit leaders on Sunday, ahead of a Monday commute impacted by a job action that has shut down rail service for three days.
The two sides met Saturday afternoon for talks that NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said were constructive and that the agency looks forward to resuming discussions tomorrow.
Salary increases for the 350 union engineers remain at the center of the fight between NJ Transit and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen, the last of the 15 unions seeking contracts with the states largest public transportation system. Unionized NJ Transit engineers last went on strike in 1983.
NJ Transit has been warning riders that a strike would impact not only the shuttered rail lines but also bus service and likely roadways as its daily rail riders seek alternatives. Rail passes will be honored on NJ Transit bus and light-rail lines, but not on any other public transit service in the state such as Amtrak, PATH or PATCO. Riders would need to pay to use ferries, private bus services and other public transit options.
