China on Sunday announced anti-dumping duties as high as 74.9 percent on imports of POM copolymers, a type of engineering plastic, from the United States, the European Union, Japan and Taiwan, Reuters reported.
The Chinese commerce ministry's findings conclude a probe launched in May 2024, shortly after the U.S. sharply increased tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, computer chips and other imports, according to the Reuters report.
POM copolymers can partially replace metals such as copper and zinc and have various applications, including in auto parts, electronics and medical equipment, according to the ministry.
The highest anti-dumping rates of 74.9 percent were levied on imports from the United States, while European shipments will face 34.5 percent duties, according to the report.

(152,900 posts)If a company exports a product at a price lower than the price it normally charges on its own home market, it is said to be dumping the product. The WTO Agreement does not regulate the actions of companies engaged in dumping. Its focus is on how governments can or cannot react to dumping it disciplines anti-dumping actions, and it is often called the Anti-dumping Agreement.

(25,776 posts)the article at a the link was of used politic water bottles, etc. What are the plastic goods that the US is trying to sell to China? I was unaware of any business in that area going into China from the US. We usually all China expensive goods like cars, iPhones, and chips.

(152,900 posts)but the bulk compounds that can be converted for use to make certain parts or items. I.e., per the OP excerpt -
For example, a "well known" bulk of such a plastic has a name-brand as "Delrin". You have big companies like Dupont who sell bulk product and that can be melted and molded into whatever shape for whatever application is needed -

I know for those who vape, delrin drip tips are a common item.

(522 posts)It could be referring to recycling of plastic drink bottles. In the US recycling of plastic bottles isn't economically feasible so many bottles are shipped to China and other countries. Some of it is recycled. A lot of it is put in the landfill.

(25,776 posts)to a tariff on plastic shipped to China for re-cycling. In either case, the article is very unclear as to what exactly it is referring to.

(152,900 posts)It's "bulk" plastic materials used to make finished products (through melting and molding).
