Bessent Says U.S.-China Trade Talks Were 'Productive,' Without Offering Specifics

Source: Wall Street Journal

GENEVA—Senior economic officials from the U.S. and China concluded their weekend trade talks Sunday without announcing details of their discussions to ease the continuing trade war between the countries.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, who led the U.S. delegation, told reporters that substantial progress was made during the marathon discussions with their Chinese counterparts, led by Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.

The talks were “productive,” Bessent said, adding that the U.S. side will share more details Monday.

During the same briefing Sunday in Switzerland, Greer suggested that some sort of agreement had been reached with the Chinese side without providing specifics.

This is a gift link without a paywall.

Here is one of the most upvoted comments after the article: "So we jack up tariffs on April 2nd the spend the next 6 weeks walking it all back and on Monday we will declare victory like the worthless UK deal." So WSJ's comments sections may lean conservative, but they are not the same as Yahoo News or F**e R******c.

Perhaps the Chinese agreed to not call the Americans "running dog capitalists" and the Americans not to call the Chinese "yellow bellied sapsuckers".

Last time Bessent and TSF made comments on the tariff negotiations; China affirmed that no such discussions were had; ongoing or planned at the time.

At least that's how the negotiations with Japan and the EU went.

The US negotiators have no idea what Trump specifically wants, are too afraid to ask and are too afraid to guess, because if they guess wrong then their career is over.
